Yes, Avira AntiVir is Vista compatible. Give it a go; you can always swap back to AVG if you decide you don't like it.

dot - one thing to bear in mind is that avira does not have an e-mail scanner, but avast does. And it's stopped lots of nasties coming in on spam e-mails for me, so avast gets my vote, along with spyware doctor (which also runs in real-time)

  • I'll tell you what I use to protect my PC:

Anti virus - Always on to protect against viruses. I would recommend paying for something as it isnt expensive. I use NOD32 as it works in the background and isnt resource hungry which means you can carry out tasks and it doesnt slow your down your machine. I personally would stay away from Mcafee and Norton. When buying you only need the anti virus bit and not some package which is supposed to do everything. Ive used AVG before and Im sure its adequate but I personally wanted something that gave me peace of mind. Kaspersky has really good reviews at the mo so definitely worth considering.

Firewall - To protect from someone accessing your PC/files. I use the free Zonealarm package which is adequate and it controls which programs access the Internet. You can deny these programs permission, give permission or theey must have your permission every time they need access. Windows has its own firewall but it isnt good enough. One thing to bear in mind is last time I looked Kasperky wasnt compatile with Zonealarm so worth checking or using different software.

Spyware protection/removal - These programs remove spyware which websites/programs install on your PC. This needs to be run fairly regularly and it helps improve the performance of your PC. I used to use Adaware but now Im using Spyware Terminator. I stopped using the former because its clunky, resource hungry and isnt very responsive but maybe partly to do with my machine being old. Anyway Im not very happy Spyware Terminator either so if anyone has recommendations. These prrograms are freeware btw.

The above is based on my own personal experiences so I hope theyre of some use.

**Would echo the sentiment about Norton - the worst program I have ever used - got it pre-installed with my latest laptop - went home downloaded AVG and removed Norton via the Norton Removal Tool from their own website) and installed AVG in it's place**

    **Zonealarm for me also**

**Still use Adaware - have not encountered the above issues personally**

**I tend to use recommendations (as per here) and stay with them unless I encounter a problem and have for the past 10 years always used Freeware programs for these type of functions**

Spyware Doctor is one of the best in it's category, and it's free...not bad on resources, real-time protection, full and quick scans and a good interface.
