these are genuine, if you have credit cards already, a lot of them (Barclaycard are one) search your file every month (as an unrecorded enquiry, not something you have to consent for) to check your history, they can then sometimes up your limit or reduce depending on what they find. This is in the terms and conditions of your agreement and explains why sometimes you may get a letter stating they are increasing your limit (or decreasing it)
