Email from Experian

Hi there
I have just found this in my spam folder.

CreditExpert has detected one or more of the following changes to your Experian® credit report for the week ending 14/09/2008:

The addition or deletion of an account
A change in the payment history of a credit account
The addition or deletion of a judgment, voluntary arrangement or bankruptcy
A search of your credit report
The addition or deletion of a Notice of Correction
The settlement of an account
A significant balance change on an active account

I registered for experian on the free trial then cancelled, is this a spoof email or should I check it ? and will I have to pay this time.
I havn't had this before
Thanks.

I am not sure that they send out emails, the simplest way is to look at the message header of the email (i can help you sort this if you tell me what mail client you use Outlook etc...) and see if it comes from Experian.

If it does not then it is a spoof.

  • Hi Helena,

I get these messages too - it is genuine. Basically it will let you knwo whenever a change has been made to your report. You click in and then if you want to see what changes then you have to pay for a new report! If you know that a search has been conducted then that will be what it is!!
  • This is the email address: customerservice@e.creditexpert.co.uk

and there is a link posted for me to log in.. now I am pretty on the ball with spoofs and companies, but this is the first time I have seen this, it looks pretty kosher- but don't they all!

Hi thanks for your reply, thats the weird thing, I don't know why anything has been searched, I havn't applied for anything.

All this makes you so paranoid.

edited: could it due to a update on account history ?- ie bank account and credit card?
  • Just to an update, I didn't realise I had a few more days to run on the free trial..so have checked my account- Experian have updated my payment history on my accounts. I wouldn't have settled even if that had mean't paying if I hadn't free days left.

The price of piece of mind eh?- which will now be £6.99 apparently!!
  • That's the thing. After my free trial expired, I was getting alerts. And then each time you want to check a new report you have to pay £5.99  . Clever marketing tool I say!!

Looks like a spoof to me, note the "e." after the @ sign. The proper address should be CustomerService@CreditExpert.co.uk

i know what you mean, i get concerned sometimes when i realise mine had been checked, the last time when i had a check i didnt know about it was west midlands travel - presumably because i applied for a bus pass, considering it is paid for by dd never worked out why they checked it, its not like it was a credit agreement

I've had a wierd email from the same email address (customerservice@e.creditexpert.co.uk). It said:
    Dear [my name]
As part of your benefits with Land Rover Pensions, you have been enjoying complimentary membership to CreditExpert, the online credit monitoring and identity fraud protection service from Experian.
To continue receiving your complimentary membership, please follow the
    steps below.
    1. Go to www.creditexpert.co.uk
    2. Log in using your username and password
    3. Enter the voucher code below when requested to do so
Your voucher code: ********** [my stars ;)]

    ...and it goes on...
I don't have any connection to Land Rover and haven't had complimentary membership from them so my first thought was it was a phishing attempt. I'd normally not bother about these emails but they use my name and as far as I can tell the links in it all point to the genuine creditexpert site - making me think its real. I forwarded it to the official creditexpert email address to ask if it was from them but they are just saying I need to take it up with Land Rover.

What do you think? Ignore it? Try and take advantage of the free report using the voucher code on the real site? Follow it up in case its some wierd identity theft thing?

Edit: I've got a username and password cos I've had a free membership from elsewhere which ran out in July
