o2 broadband/mac/mail/thunderbird problem

We normally use thunderbird and have no problems usually. We've just changed isp to o2 (UK company).
We tried to update the settings but emails not working, keeps coming up as name or password not recognised even though it will randomly come back with a test email we've sent.
Rang o2 who were non the wiser. Tried to run 'mail' to see if we could just use that. the icon's there but nothing happens when you click it?
Tried to 'uninstall' thunderbird, mail still didn't work. Tried reinstalling thunderbird and thunderbird still didn't work.
Any suggestions?

Under 'Outgoing Mail Server' you will need to tick the box for 'My server requires authentication' and then select 'settings.' From the two options available now select 'Log on using' and then in the fields enter:- Account name: username@o2.co.uk
- Password: password for 'o2.co.uk'

Thanks, tried all their instructions for 3 hours last night.
