Brand new Vista PC, bought in July.
The old one died, before it died the mouse disappeared from the screen & a USB error message used to come up, I had to unplug mouse & plug back in.
Problems got worse & it died,
New PC perfect.
A few days ago while browsing the mouse started stopping, even though I moved the trackball, the pointer didn't move on screen (like they weren't even connected). Then it would come back to life again & catch up.
So I changed the trackball (thinking it might be old & knackered) to my other (same model) trackball & its still doing exactly the same thing.
Its a different problem to the last time, as its like its frozen for a while (the freezing lasts up to around a minute & seems to happen in clusters, but very frequently), any ideas?

Microsoft Operating systems put usb devices into power save mode.
Sometimes this causes issues with some devices. Sounds like the trackball is getting shunted into a powersave mode, and then not being able to jump back to full power when you use it.
Try turning off the powersave feature for the usb host controller that its plugged into (device properties). Hopefully that will solve your issues.0 -

I amazed myself
I was able to check that:o
BUT the box for the powersave was unchecked, so its not that:(
And the device manager says it working properly:rolleyes:
Anyother ideas?:beer:0 -
yeah, try going to the site of your trackball's manufacturer....see if they have an updated driver for it.had a similar problem with logitec mouse, turned out the driver just needed updating.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
my guess would be something is using the CPU 100%, I've encountered a similar situation when GPU folding and encoding 4 video streams at the same time, and surfing etc.., the mouse can become very unresponsive, solution is to either do a little less, or change the applications priority slightly lower.
Plan B would be, if no intensive apps running (ctrl-alt-delete for task manager, you can see CPU loading) check for malware.
hope you get it sortedUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

Its a major problem, when I'm just looking at MSE & NOTHING else at all on the PC its freezing, & dissapearing & jumping about the place.
I asked a tech guy at work what I was susposed to look for with the task manager, he said processes & them the CPU column.
So I've done this, most of them stuff is 00, 01 & 02, but sometimes something jumps up using more, but its all very fast, its all jumping a bit.
I can't secect TM when the mouse is dead anyway as I have vista & after doing CAD I have to select TM. If I leave it open on top its quite big, if I minimise it I can't select it to see it when it all freezes.
IF I get a new trackball (different make) will that solve the problem?
PLEASE PLEASE HELP, PC is only a couple of months old & its awful to use.
I checked trackball is up to date on website, so its not that.
AND if I have the speakers on while its happening it makes a strang repeated pranging noise.0 -
Borrow a mouse (different model) from work and test it with that. If the same problem occurs then its something in the PC. If not then its the mouse.0

I have tried two different trackballs.
I will have to buy a mouse, would I be as well off buying a trackball, as this is what I will want anyway?0 -
The AOLDesktop.exe jumps up to 40 on the CPU for a moment occasionally.0

Personally, having anything by AOL installed would be the first thing I'd address as a problem in itself."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I've been with AOL for years now.
I am happy with them & millions use them.
So there must be a way I can have AOL & a PC that works.
Thank you for your useful advice.0
