Adopted A 3 Year Old Dog Advice Please

Hello... On Tuesday evening we bought home our new family member!! A 3 year old !!!!!... So far she has fab social skills loves everyone etc but has no dog skills if you get what I mean.... She does not know how to play you throw a ball and she just looks at you (for example) That we can work on the kids & I run around and she lays down watching (and Im sure laughting!!)

The problem is her toilet training I could do with some advice as there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when she goes!!
Tuesday night.... All clean
Wednesday Day (left about 5 hours) One wee on the floor
Wednesday Night... All clean (lots of howling!!)
Thurday Day.. left as Wednesday One wee
Thursday night One wee (more howling)
Friday Day All Clean
Friday Night One wee and one poo!! (no howling left her a light and radio on!!)

She goes to wee and poo when you take her out sometimes but others times she doesnt.. When she had howled in the night we went down to let her out but she had already been so ignored her.

Sorry for long post but just wanted some hints... Shes booked for a vet check on Wednesday so we can book her in to be speyed as this has not been done

If you search Housetraining and or/puppies on here you'll find loads of advice (detailed:D ) about toilet training......IMO you need to treat her like a young puppy, outside every hour, immediately after waking etc and make a huge fuss of her when she performs.....so she knows what you want of her.

Since you're already going to the vets you could ask him to give her a general health check, just in case there's a reason she can't hold on, they should also be able to point you in the direction of a good training class, great for bonding with her as well as basic training.

Give her time to settle in, have you considered a crate to train her in? It will all come in time. I often have to retrain some foster dogs i get before they are rehomed.

its very early days for her to have worked out where/when its ok to "go" Make a fuss when she gets it right. try not to scold her when she gets it wrong.
hope she settles in soon, and learns to play!

Take her out every hour or so praise and give her atreat when she goes. five hours is a long time for her to hang on try to get some one to let her out halfway through at least til she settles down. let her out or take for a short walk last thing at night and encourage her to go and praise and treat if she does. If she does go in the house dont scold her just take her out to where you want her to go. clean areas in house that she has gone on well to avoid the sent lingering as she will continue to go in these areas if she can still smell it. give her time to settle and she will learn to play

Thanks everyone... seems that we are doing the right things she is just soooo lazy all she does is chill out on the setee!!!

What sort of breed is she? This might give a clue to the types of games she would enjoy.

I only come on this board to see photos of pets. Can't access your photo, please fix it cause I want to see your new "boy":D I know he is a she but all dogs to me are "boys" or "lads"

Was she from a shelter, she might have been badly treated, or the time on kennels has traumatised her? Poor little thing, I wish I could see her.
My dog was like that, didn't know how to play, but give her a few weeks, she'll get the hang of it, and when she gives you a big grin and your heart melts, it'll be so worth it.
If you've no idea of her background, you have to treat her like a little soldier that's come home from war to a place of peace and love and warm blankets and biscuits.
The weeing at strange times, you'll have to help her along and show her the places she can wee, if you put some newspaper down, she'll soon realise it's ok if she needs a wee in the night she has somewhere to go without being told off.

Oh she's gorgeous! She'll keep you lovely and warm in the winter :cool:
Don't worry too much about the toilet stuff, just grit your teeth and clean it up, cuddle her loads, she'll settle in soon xxx
