Heavy User Needs New Home: Help?

Hi,

I've just received a letter from BT this morning stating that I have been 'well' over my download limit of 40GB a month for the past few months. They are giving the option to either cough up another £130 for my overuse in October and continue with my service as normal (£29.99 a month) or cancel my broadband contract and they'll forget about the £130. (Not much of a hard decision then)

I work a lot from home and send building plans (hefty big files) back and forward to my head office as well as a lot of personal use.

I want to keep or upgrade my 2MB line and I also want and need to be able to download/upload at least 150-200GB a month.

I'm sure I'm not the only heavy user (Um 14 Stone, 6FT) out there so, come on heavy guys and girls I have 30 days to let BT know what I am going to do.

What provider can help me with at least a 2MB line and 150-200GB+ usage for £29.99 or less/more whatever?

My option to stay with BT at my current usage rates will mean I will face a bill of approx £29.99 subscrition plus £130+ extra usage charge every month!

Cheers in advance,

DA

have a look here at the business options

    http://www.f2s.com/adsl/businessuser.php

I am on their home package and have no trouble at all but suggest for your high loading a Business account would be better especially if you can get a contribution from employers or offset against tax.

If you would like to take it further please PM me for an invite .

  • Are you on a Business Tarif (as you work from home). Normally the business tarifs do not impose a limit

Ps , a migration from BT to F2S will cost nothing and you will be on a monthly contract so easy to get out of if not suitable 1

Have a look at ZEN . No limits, no restrictions and a top class ISP. Compare them with any other ISP HERE . I've never seen them beaten in any category by any other ISP (in speed, reliability and customer service). I've used them for about a year now and have not had one single problem. I've had no slow downs, no disconnections and I've not once had a need to talk to their customer service about a problem. When I phoned them to request additional fixed IP addresses (free) they answered the phone after 3 rings with a person!!! (no automated line, and no foreign callcentre staff).

They are not the cheapest, but you will not find a better ISP in the UK.

  • I'd second the Freedom2Surf post - excellent service.
  • If you are in the right area either UK Online or Bulldog will give you unlimited 8MB for £29.99. Bulldog will make you use their phone but line rental is the same. They are fractionally cheaper than BT but don't give access to external services like 1899.com on the same terms so for this post let's call it a wash; if you make lots of calls to the US etc. that might be a factor. UK Online keep you on BT. I am with Bulldog and their customer service sucks but the line itself is very reliable and pretty much as advertised. If you aren't in the right area the other posts will be more useful.

i received the same letter they must be gettiing rid of the people who are using the services to the full lol they can shove it up their backside.Ive signed up with bulldog this week if you sign up before the 30th of november you get 2 months free. Also if you join http://www.edealsuk.com/Special-ChristmasOffers.aspx you get £5 cash back there is also a code in here some place i cant remember where that gives you another £5 cash back and when you join bulldog through their site. They give you £18 cash back they have emailed me saying they will send a cheque for £28 as soon as everything is sorted so that gives me 3 months free
  • Thanks for all your help.

I've completed some research and I've decided to go with Zen as recommended by Rex above. They are a little bit more expensive than I am currently paying but all the reports I have read and stats I have viewed put them consistently at the top of the pile with regard to speed, service, uptime, progressiveness etc, etc.

    So....time for a little experiment.

Tomorrow morning (Mon 27th) I will phone BT for my MAC number (This BT dept is only available Mon-Fri. MAC no. is required to migrate to another ISP). I will then contact ZEN via their website and sign up.

I'll report back here with my experiences and give an update when my service is switched on.

    Best regards,

    D.A.

Good move (and welcome to Zen). Once you're on Zens network you will see the difference a truly top quality ISP will make. I know they are not the cheapest, but in return for paying more you will find the service you receive is not in any way comparible with any of the cheap ISPs (completely different league). I've always found their customer service is the best kind out there. You just don't normally come accross any problems, so have no need to use them at all. I've not had one single problem with this ISP since I signed up with them (about a year).

I was reading this morning and found that you are not the only one that has come accross this problem with BT. It seems that they have started a policy of getting rid of their heavy users. Have a look HERE .

  • Here we go:

Call BT....they issued me within a MAC number.

Logged onto Zen website and started the order process. Website wouldn't take my MAC number telling me it was the wrong format for a MAC number.
Phoned the ZEN helpline was put through to the correct support staff immediately. Read out my MAC number to him and was told the last letter was an 'o' and not an '0'. (Minor BT niggle....I read the MAC number back to the BT staff member and he confirmed zero).

Entered my new MAC number into ZEN site, signed up for monthly payment and pressed the confirm button.

I have received an e-mail confirming my order and letting me know it should take up to five days.

I'll let you know how I get on.

    So far so good.
