Part worns are another good option.

They usually come from Holland or Germany where the tyre tread thickness is more stringent. IIRC all new tyres have a tread of around 8-10mm (average). In Germany they have to be replace when they are at 6mm thickness. Our legal limit is 1.6mm so you have plenty to play with.

A local place to me are very very good. If you call them before 11am they can get hold of any make and model of tyre for £20. that includes fitting, valves and balancing.

    Hi Guys,

Anyone know of some reasonable garage chains or offers going at the mo for tyres?

Don't really want to go down the mailorder route as it's just hassle at the mo.

I need 2 x 185/60/R14H and the best price I've got so far is £60 all in.

Skint_Catt will have no doubt bought tyres by now - but for others - I offer

As suggested by "iluvmylexus" go to Costco - and join. Best Brands at unbelievable prices and Fitting+Valve+Balance = £1!! they have 17 branches - see http://www.costco.co.uk/ (no connection with me)

I was a Snr. Techie at the No.1 Tyre Manufacturer for 35 years - so would like to offer -

1: Buy THE BEST you can afford - you will get it back in life - yours and tyre's
2: Best grippers ALWAYS on the rear. Reason - handling. Creates Understeer but on front creates dangerous oversteer. You need your grip and handling in unexpected moments of stress (max. tyre test point) not when pottering.
3: Invisible structural casing damage is more likely on Remoulds/Retreads than on new tyres, and extemely likely on scrappers. Why is the car in the scrap yard - accidented?
4: It always amazes me that most people will not quibble at the cost of a tank full of fuel @ £60 - is non-critical, and lasts 2000 miles but will argue at a tyre for £60 that lasts 30,000 miles and is vital for safety!!! ???

Your nearest and dearest would like you to think hard about it..... :A
