I receive DLA (higher mob, lower care) and I'm looking to change my gas/electricity supplier, so this thread is very helpful. But I'm finding it hard to find the actual tarrifs, ie how much of a discount you actually get for the social tarrifs.

Is there anywhere I can get this info, or do I need to ring round the different suppliers and ask

You'll find that it's actually cheaper to opt for an online direct debit tariff than it is any of the social tariffs.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

If that truly is the case that's a poor response so far by the suppliers.

Eon are due to launch their CaringEnergy Social Tariff by the end of the year. Let's hope these Social Tariffs start delivering great rates soon to those who most need it.
  • I think BexTech is right. If my mum was online I'd have found her an online tariff. Opting for monthly direct debit, dual fuel and paperless billing also usually attract discounts.
The energy companies seem to be almost deliberately hiding their social tariffs. EOn publicise their Age Concern tariff, which actually isn't very good. I find this shocking as I think most older people would understandably assume that if the product is endorsed by Age Concern, then it must be the best one for pensioners. When mum joined EOn, she asked about it, but chose against and went for her original £90 price fix deal. Even though they knew by this that she was over 60, they did not tell her about the Staywarm tariff. It was only when I searche online for deals and found it that she rang and was put onto it.
  • Neither Age Concern or Staywarm are Eon's social tariffs, theirs is being launched later this year. Age Concern is good for some very low user customers. Staywarm really just gives peace of mind, it's not generally a competitive tariff.
  • There's some similar info here;

I've added the Scottish Power info to the initial post.

Yes, but is it cheaper than BGas Click Energy or other companies discounted online tariffs? It wasn't the last time I checked.
I finally got through to british gas about changing to essentials- first registered with them on 30th July...spoke to lady who confirmed the registration process was outsourced and they're still dealing with applications.
She checked my rates (I was on click energy 4) and we worked out I was better on essentials for gas but click 6 for electricity.

    got letter today confirming
essentials gas tariff 4.192 tier 1 (up to 1143 kwh) 2.314 tier 2 backdated to when I called.
checked online and it's put me in credit on gas account.

What is your rate for electric on click6 jasmine?

on essentials its first 165 @ 14.918 then 9.016 kwh but this includes your duel fuel discount too so I was told today.

  • I rang this morning - finally being able to get through..to be told this tariff is now closed. I was told it had a quota of 500,000, which varies with the number lower down on this thread 750, 000?

I hadn't realised it was a limited option or I would have stayed online until I got through before..but gave up after 20 plus minutes:rolleyes: on couple of occasions..and my speech means 'the record your name option' is more than a nightmare;)
That quota number wasn't publicised particularly highly and certainly wasn't on the web site ?
I had thought there was something odd as I couldn't find mention of it anywhere on the website:rotfl:last week. Why couldn't they put that there?
Why can't they be more transparent? Now to check tariffs you have to go through form fill in thingy..umpteen times and still don't get the info

So now have to try and work out this mathematical puzzle from begginning I guess..but we have to get this bill right first as they had charged me single meter usage wrongly ..instead of charging me E7 when my meter was changed. But she was just about to charge me on another tariff, instead of Click 5 which I was on when we got cut off....

So I would love to know what percentage of the total customer base eligible for Essentials the 500,000 would equate to..how large is their alledged largesse?:D
