Hi, ever since connecting my desktop to the internet and downloading programmes and things, the computer seems lot slower then usual, this is noticeable when booting up...
Are there any programmes I can use to troubleshoot the problem?
I hope I haven't downloaded something bad or damaged something

You could try 'Disk Defragment' which basically gets rid of all or your unused internet files, such as cookies and tempory internet files and anything else that slows your computer down.
Vista
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragment.
Than press 'Defragment Now'
Xp should also be simliar.
You can also use 'Disk cleanup' too.
Alternativelyyou can go into 'Control Panel' > 'Add Remove Programs' and remove any unused programs that you dont use no longer.

but run them other way round - cleanup first then the disk defrag.
(the defrag doesnt actually remove files- its analogous to todying up a messy room- so the drive runs faster as files are all in one place rather than bits of files scattered all over ).
can also go into internet explorer > Tools > Internet OPtions . and there is a browsing history option which you can use to delete unwanted junk that may have built upDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
Hate to say it but you might just have to re-format! I don't think there's anything out there that can fix a sluggish PC 'cept a fresh start! Spring clean that HD!0

although I was loathed to , I have today bought system mechanic , I hate to say it , but it has worked. It did find all sorts of scary stuff, and then offered to deal with it!! including two 'parasites' which I didn't like the sound of. Not very money saving , but hope this helps.0

hart, that is so false....keep your pc clean and lean and you'll not slow down much......in fact, I've just posted a cleanup routine on this thread.....

Snowqueen, I would be amazed if, after a thorough cleanup, the pc doesn't get some performance back...oh, and stick some more RAM in as well

ahem... ...until OP tells us which OS they are using we cannot really give advice...
in Vista defrag is automatic every wednesday...
also if your internet is running abit slow then so will your browser...;)
and whats wrong with system restore...to a point when the system was working fine...:p
is it just the browser that is running slow when trying to get on the web...or everything you open on the system...:o
if so would suggest you check your browser settings before doing anything else...:D

Disk Defragment does not get rid of of all or your unused internet files, such as cookies and tempory internet files, that what disk clean up does.
However neither is likely to make the computer run faster.
She needs to see what is running using the task manager and what is using up CPU time.
I expect she has downloaded a pile of stuff which then takes it upon itself to load itself at start up thus slowing the startup process considerable and also running unnecessarily doing nothing useful ie spyware and adware and the like, she may
have also got a virus etc...
So it would be very helpful if she posted which processes are using CPU time when it is going slow.
This site should help:-

Ice - vista scheduled defrag can be turned off, so there is no guarantee that if they're using vista that it has defragged. Also, default is 01:00 a.m. when not all of us will have our pc switched on !!......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
