phone line connection and internet on low income

my daughter is on low income and shares a flat.
She has scrounged my old pc and wants to connect to the internet.
BT want £125 to connect the existing line and she cant afford this or to take out an 18 month contract to get cheaper installation.
Can anyone offer advice on how to get internet access cheaply without the cost and strings attached to BT line?

Going for mobile broadband will be a false economy unless she is pretty uncertain not to be there for more than a year or so.

How about getting the flatmates to stump up for a share of the installation cost and also getting them to share the broadband? Between a few people, the £125 isn't going to be quite so painful.

Exactly what I'd suggest...3 mobile dongel. In fact its what we do at the moment. I resent having to pay BT that much to put the line in and then for rental...when all we want is a little bit of the internet. Works a treat.

  • does mobile internet give very fast speed?
I think she is concerned that she may not be in the flat for 12 months
  • i have no experience of mobile broadband. Do you just plug in a dongle and can then use the internet as much as you like up to monthly limit?
What limit would you advise if some music downloading was required each month?
    Thanks
  • Yep...you pick the limit you think is right for you...every webpage is different but roughly for a 3GB usage which if you shop around you will get for a tenner a month you would get the following......
    • 24,000 web pages or
    • 1 million emails or
    • 9000 photos or
    • 600 music files
You need to check the small print for fair useage clauses and if there will be additional costs...which could be expensive.

Also when thinking about a carrier consider whether you have had any problems with Mobile phone reception for that carrier because Mobile Broadband uses the same backbone as the mobile network. Each carrier can check reception for you and they will explain the return policy if you cannot use it
