I put a bit of melted chocolate (milk, dark or white)and half a cherry on the top of my fairy cakes. It sets hard and so doesn't go all goey.Jane

Yes, my DD's old school would allow cake & biscuits too. What they are trying to get away from are lunchboxes that are wholly made up of processed foods - for example one child brought as "lunch" 2 bags of crisps and a Mars bar :eek:0 -

Wish i could get away that, but i would feel too guilty, my dd and ds do have a very small choc bar and crisps but also raisins, fruit and yoghurts too. 9 times out of 10 the choccie comes back unopened.0 -

Yes cake and biscuits are fine and snack bar chocolate is allowed but packs of sweets like haribo or large bars of choclate like 4 finger kitkats or 2 bar twix and so forth are not allowed and to be honest i agree i do not often give mine a covered chocolate bar but favour chewiee bars or cookie bars as there treat in the lunch box. Mine have a sandwich, piece of fruit or veg, a home baked item, a yogurt or cheese, a snack bar and a drink, though i do change this my son loves a sausage salad and sometimes they will have crisps.r.mac any chance of you pointing me in the direction of your choc-orange fairy cake recipe? it sounds yummy
This is easy i just made it up a 2 egg fairy cake mixture x2 ( 2 bowls) in the chocolate bowl i replace 1oz of flour with cocoa powder i still add vanilla essence.
In the 2nd bowl instead of vanilla essence i add orange essence and if i want it to look orange to i add colouring (i use the pastes that i use for my cake making to colour the icing rather than the liquid find it is better).
Then i put a spoonful of each in the cake cases, it comes out great as it comes out showing a bit of each colour and tastes yummyStill TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

I do the same with lemon instead of orange.. makes a fab marble cake .
I am sure a small jelly or icing flower on a bun would be fine.. they aren't sweets.. you could throw a coupe of smarties in the dough mix before you cook the buns so they can play hunt the smartie! lol. Or add a few choc chips? or chopped cherries/apricots/raisins?LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I usually cut the top off the cupcake and make a small dip in it. Fill it with butter cream, icing, jam etc and pop the top back onto it (without the bit you took from your 'dip.')

You could buy some roll out icing and cut shapes out - stars, hearts, etc or just round with an egg cup. Spread a little jam on the back of the shape to make it stick and put on top of the cake. Also try sprinkling the tops of the cakes with hundreds and thousands before you bake them.
Another thing I do, if you don't want too much icing or chocolate on the top is put the icing or melted choc into a small sandwich bag, squidge it into the corner and chop the corner off. Just drizzle over the tops of the cakes. Makes the topping go further and doesn't make the cake quite so sweet and sticky.0 -
I normally put melted chocolate on top and then sprinkle it with hundreds and thousands. The chocolate should be hard enough to not make a mess, unless it's a hot day obviously!I'm so sorry if you were enjoying this thread and mine is the last post!!
I seem to have a nasty habit of killing threads!
