Can I leave OneTel and keep email address?

Trying to get my parents off OneTel ADSL (and phone). They used to have a dialup acct with OneTel before ADSL and with same email addresses. If we move the ADSL account to another provider will they lose the email addresses?

Do I need to say anything to OneTel to keep the email addresses?

If they a specific Onetel email addresses, they cannot retain them if they no longer do business with Onetel.

For 'portable' email addresses, you should choose one of the free services - GMAIL, YAHOO, MSN etc. I personally would favour GMAIL. You can only get a GMAIL ID on invitation, though - you can PM me for one, or ask on the GMAIL invite thread.

It's a bit of a pain to change emails - but if they go for a free email service, they won't need to change in future.

Just done the same thing; cancelled onetel and the email accounts went off.
Phoned them back and reinstated the PAYG dial-up internet access and the email accounts. Doesn't cost anything if you don't dial-up as its 1p/minute when accessed.

Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for. So now I know I need to call back to reinstate.

    Isn't that 1.5p per min?
  • To solve the problem of being tied to an email address and therefore an ISP, register a domain like yourname.co.uk from somebody like https://www.123reg.co.uk and then you can have as many email address on the domain as you like and they can all forward to an ISP email address or hotmail.

Its very simple to set up, you just need to keep paying for it every year or so to hang on to it.

A co.uk domain is only a few pounds per year. It means if you want to change ISPs you just change where you email is forwarded to and nobody is affected. If your parents aren't that IT savy then just administer it for them.

On reverting to the dial-up payg account, you will probably need to call in once every 120 or 180 days to keep the account alive.

Not true, I've not used it for over a year and the CS guy confirmed that I never actually need to dial it.

By downloading the emails you are showing the account is active.

I still have a lineone email address (taken over by Tiscali) and I havent used their services for at least 5 years. I just download emails via outlook express and have had no problems.
