Anglo Irish Bank....

Options
Has anyone dealt with these people in the past? I was looking at their 1 year 7.05% bond.

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), that they are covered by the FSCA £35k protection.

Were they efficient and easy to deal with?

Many thanks in advance.

  • I have had a couple of fixed interest bonds with them - no problems setting up or getting money out - easy to deal with (over the phone) if I remember correctly.

Just a pity they dont offer monthly interest option.

They are covered by the FSA guarantee.

I'm just in the process of moving a recently matured BM fixed term deposit over to them (the 7.05% you mention). First part of the process has gone smoothly - just trust they process cheques quickly as there's a significant sum sitting in the OH's current account from earlier today!

  • I have used Anglo Irish bank fixed term bonds a few times. they have been extremely efficient.

The £35000 guarantee only covers UK banks/building societies. Is Anglo Irish a UK bank or an Irish bank. Banks from other countries outside UK are not covered

    How are my deposits protected?

All deposits in Anglo Irish Bank benefit from protection under various deposit protection schemes. Deposits held with our UK branches are protected by the Irish Deposit Protection Scheme and the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It is normal for banks regulated in the UK and Ireland to be protected by either or both of these compensation schemes.

Payments under the Irish Deposit Protection Scheme are limited to 90% of the total deposits held by the Account Holder subject to a maximum of €20,000 (or the equivalent in pounds sterling). Payments under the UK scheme are limited to £35,000 of your total deposits with us, less any payments made to you under the Irish scheme. This means that each of our customers with deposits at a UK Branch is protected up to a maximum of £35,000, the same level of protection as customers of any other UK Bank to which only the UK Scheme applies.
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another, so please feel free to ignore this.

I, too, have used them for several bonds over the years.

    Very efficient, quick, no problems.

I think there's a bit of a clue in the name? It's a hybrid - but protection is offered appropriately depending upon which side of the water you deposit.

  • They seem ok once you can get through to them on the phone. Whenever I've had to speak to them I have been on hold for at least 20 minutes and I find that a bit frustrating. Apart from that I've had no problems with them.
  • Has anyone else spotted that Anglo Irish have opened an Issue 2 of their Easy Access and 7-day Notice Accounts, and allowed a 0.7% - 0.8% point differential to open up between Issue 2 and the earlier Issue 1 - but refrained from telling holders of the Issue1?

What's more the annual Notice of Interest Rates letter refers to winning Moneyfacts Best Notice and No Notice Account Awards, and meeting their commitment to savers under the Banking Code, doesn't draw your eye to the new issue.

So, if you opened an account with Anglo Irish before August, check what issue it is - you may not be getting the higher rate they currently publicise!
