Broadband So Called Speeds

Firstly try out this site and see if you are actually getting what your paying for its worthile i was shocked.

www.broadband-help.com

On this site there is a service to check your broadband speed.

My speed i knew there was something up with my provider and this site has proved it to me. I was uploading photos and holiday videos to send to the family abroad and it took so long over 2hours also when i try to download anything trust me it takes forever.

I am currently paying for speeds of 8mb with BT and i'm appalled to discover i'm only receiving 1.7mb and i only live down the road from my nearest telephone exchange, i'm disgusted i thought i could put my trust into one of the biggest telecoms in the uk (BT) Bad Tendencies more like.

Where do i stand in cancelling my contract in which i'm not happy with and feel this service oh excuse me sorry what service was missold to me?

  • BT clearly state when you sign up with them you get speeds of up to 8mb.They tell you

"If your line won't support up to 8Mb download speeds, we'll offer the best speed available on your line. Top broadband speeds depend on a number of factors including distance from exchange. Factors affecting 8Mb broadband speeds also include local availability and line test. Conditions apply. We recommend you take the broadband speed test to see your maximum potential speed."

their speedchecker can be found here.Visit.http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=16541&s_cid=con_FURL_broadband/speedtest

Line speed is dependant on many things including line conditions, equipment on line etc. Are you on your main socket, without any extension leads in play?

If you're a BT customer, use speedtester.bt.com, it will show if you have a problem with your IP profile. Uploading will always be slower with ADSL. Photos and videos are generally going to be largeish files so it will take a while.
  • I've just checked mine using your link and get 2.8. However tried two other tests (thinkbroadband and speedtest.net) and get 14.7 which is what I usually get.

Your upload ratio will always be somewhere around the region of 1/4 of your broadbands maximum download ratio, this is an almost universal standard for all suppliers and has been for a long long time.

Only for BT Wholesale resellers, not all ISP's.

download speeds are given priority by ISP's as most people are wanting to download alot more information then upload it. ISP's do not usually specify their upload speeds anyway but they will be a lot less then the download speed advertised in your package.

    Broadband speed checkers are unreliable.

If too many people are using them at once their server can only throw out data at a given speed, then the speed the indicate can often be inaccurate.

Yeah, upload speed is a tiny fraction of the download. Many people forget this. They forget this when using file sharing and only getting data from one or two people they often don't realise it doesn't matter how fast your download speed is, you can only get the data as fast as they can upload it to you.

  • It's a pants website it reckons my speed is 1.1mb when the hub manager is showing 7mb plus it says I can get O2's broadband packages which I can't as the exchange hasn't been unbundled.
