Thank you, it certainly feels like a lucky escape:T
  • No. I'd be offended too, and like I say I'd put in a claim straight away, including a token sum for distress. Bringing up the religious discrimination angle could help, as it's obvious he only wants "virtuous" Christian tenants.

Yawn, what "discrimination"? you have to prove that had a jewish applicant turn up, that he wouldn't have asked them if they went to the synagogue, or if a muslim applicant turned up that he wouldn't ask them if they sholat.

Clearly the guy is demented. Leave it at that and just get your deposit back.

But he discriminated against me for not going to church, surely?

    Hard to prove.

He turned you down for not finding £1000 in 20 mins. He didn't say he turned you down for not being 'moral' ;)

But he didn't turn her down.

    She pulled out.

Agreed the LL is a freak, and I have no idea how you stand legally, but I don't think your case is very strong.

You put down a holding deposit, then backed out (understandably).

I'm not sure you would get your HD back if it went to court.

As mentioned, you were the one who backed out, if you can get your holding deposit back then OK, if not, well put it down to experience, you could have ended up under the patio if you had stayed there (still, he would have prayed for you).

Actually I bet he makes a fortune frightening prospective tenant's to death.

My thought is that he changed the oringinal date for wanting the deposit, so that was a breech of something (I know not what, I do not profess to being a legal eagle!)

From what emsy has said, he gave every indication of wishing to turn her down based on her answers. And it's not like she just decided she didn't want the flat any more, he was asking questions no landlord has any right to ask and he was making it exceptionally clear that he didn't want her as a tenant.
