  • Although older Carolt, I don't think wiser so can only say look after your family and take pleasure in the simple things. That's all I've learnt. Oh, and as my Dad used to say 'they can't take your hands' meaning work yourself out of trouble. Which is what I have always done.

However I have a joke for you....it's my birthday today and I received a card from my husband with the following......

NEWS FLASH.... A thousand boxes of Viagra were stolen last night from a chemist shop.....and inside .....The police are looking for a gang of HARDENED criminals.

Who said romance is dead. A x
    Happy birthday, Anne!
  • Chill out Carol, what will be, will be, I’ve been on this planet for quite a while and never seen anything like the financial carnage going on right now.
One thing is for sure the pain the financials go through, takeovers included, will filter down to us.
I just looked at the US stocks and it’s unrelenting, each day more big names are appearing to be at risk. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs don’t look too good. Too big to fail? I really don’t like the phrase as they have failed, quite miserably actually.
Nothing we can do, except spend our way out of it, but I guess that’s a non starter!
Enjoy your life, we are here just a short time.

I guess most things come with consequences, I for one would like house prices to fall at least 30% from peak, the thing is a whole load of s**t has to hit the fan for this to happen, part of which we are seeing at the moment. Will I suffer the "consequences" of maybe losing my job, or other people on this board who want house prices to go the same way, I'm sure its a real possibilty.

Lifes a bit of a gamble in most areas, what you are given in one hand, maybe taken from your other hand, I guess you just hope that it doesn't happen

That just about sums it up !! .. The current climate was almost inevitable from last summer (07) its only now that the average person is waking up to the storm we are entering, up until todays employment figures this whole thing somehow seemed distant almost irrelevant, now the reality is slowly dawning on them ...

Short of taking deep breaths, can anyone older and wiser (or indeed younger and calmer) please explain gently why this is all a Good Thing

Why do people persist in saying how brilliant they were in forecasting the UK problems
that are related to UK stupid lenders, mewing etc. The problems we are experiencing do relate to the housing market but it was the US housing market and the related CDO'S etc and I am sure most people were not aware of the toxic nature back in 2005.
I'm brilliant at forecasting I am. I keep saying it because it annoys people.
    Happy chappy

I'm curled up on the sofa with a bag of wine gums.
    :)

Just off to bed now to curl up with my wife. Maybe she'll give me a wine gum?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • A lot of people with non jobs will finally get flirted onto the dole saving us tax money.

This 'mother of all reccessions' will clear out a lot of crap that has invaded our society hopefully. Yes there will be pain for some maybe a lot, but when things get tight the anger at money wasted will be felt harder and harder by the people and their anger will be heard louder.
This government hasnt a chance of winning the next election and the next lot in will have no choice but to tighten belts and stop wasteing money on utter pants.

Did you know the derisory name calling something 'pants' came from the trouser corderoy, because they were, in fact, complete pants!

It's going to be interesting justifying spending £12,000,000,000* on the Olympics whilst cutting people's dole or pension money (one of which will have to happen).

Another 81,000 signed on this month. That's a million a year signing on at this rate and we've not had a recession yet!

*I believe this to be the latest figure plucked from the air

You can't be that naive, Stevie. The US market was just the catalyst but the UK had been up to the exact same thing for many, many years!!!

Naive mmmm, this all reminds me of the Hans Christian Anderson tale of the king with no clothes. You have not noticed the worlds stock markets in turmoil, must be because house prices were too expensive in the UK

Trying to view current economic situation calmly, but finding it hard, as news is just one thing after another.

Short of taking deep breaths, can anyone older and wiser (or indeed younger and calmer) please explain gently why this is all a Good Thing or why it's better to get it all out of the way, or some such.

Could really do with some optimism.

Alternatively, does anyone know any funny stories or irrelevant but cheery anecdotes to take my mind off the sound of dominoes falling, houses of cards crashing etc.
    Please.

Can only say if you were in the trenches at Gallipoli or the Somme in the first world war or one of those huts I saw at Birkenau in the second you would find this a doddle
