  • A new MoT centre has just opened in Chelmsford, Essex and that's good news after the closure of the County Council centre at Coval Lane a couple of years ago. This one is operated by Chelmsford Borough Council at Freighter House on the Boreham interchange of the A12, same place where all the refuse freighters operate from and near Civic Amenity site. It's appointment only from Monday - Friday and only does MoT's same as Coval Lane used to do, so totally independent. The switchboard number is 01245 606606 and ask for vehicle workshop MOT testing at Freighter House. This is all new so there's nothing up on the Council's website as yet, chances are you'll need to get transferred and that's the time to note the direct dial number.

Are there really no council MOT centres anywhere in Norfolk? According to the map, I'd have to travel either to Bury St Edmunds or Cambridge.

I know of the preconceptions of those of us who live north of the Waveney or east of the Great Ouse, but surely Norfolk County Council has its own MOT centre.

    UPDATE

Colchester Borough Council facility now does servicing/repairs.
MOT's not now available on Monday's as this is now the day they service the dust carts.

  • There does not seem to be any coucil testing centres in norfolk unless someone knows of one
  • Just read the MSE email with interest and I've had a good look, but can't seem to find a council MOT centre in the Milton Keynes area - does anyone know of one?

    Colchester

Colchester MOT centre (I think?) formerly Sheppard racing on Severalls industrial estate, have used them for about 10 years and happy with them - and trust them! MOT's are only £18.95

I have been told that Norse on Fifers Lane do Mot's. Hopefully some help for the people of Norfolk.

If they no longer do this then sorry for building up people's hope.

Use the one at Lowestoft, I always use them and I can recommend them. Being a council run and approved MOT station, they have no other vested interest in your car (eg. selling you parts and services you neither want or need)!
Therefore you can be assured that your MOT will be a very fair one and that you wont get ripped off!

The worst ones are those that offer you half price or cheap MOT's. You can always expect to pay more as these places are always on the fiddle and can't be trusted. They will tell you that there is "something" wrong with your car, even though there probably isn't.

Avoid using places like Kwik Fit as these are by far the worst places to get any sort of work done in my opinion, rip off merchants for sure!

I think Norfolk Councils have outsourced most of their services - there is a post on page 1 concerning Serco in Dereham - they are contracted to Breckland Council for environmental services (bins, street cleaning, recycling etc), and have an MOT centre at their depot. This used to be the council depot in days gone by...

I have just booked my daughters car in for it's test there, cost £30.

Norse (Norfolk County Services) was spun off from Norfolk CC, and I think they probably offer the same service in Norwich:
