DS's laptop will connect to an unsecured network and access the internet using that.

So your problem is due to wireless encryption then. What type of encryption is the router set to WEP? WPA? You should be using WPA or better. When this laptop was restored, is it patched up to date? You need it to be at SP2 for WPA encryption.

  • I found the wireless network settings on the desktop earlier and printed those off. They say the Data Encription Type is WEP. I have no idea what that actually means.

I'm not sure what 'patched up to date' means, is that downloading updates from MS? Just guessing there and hoping not to look like a complete idiot.

Personally I would log into the router using an Ethernet cable and set up WPA encryption as your router should support this and WEP is ineffective and effectively obsolete now. Yes patched up to date means that the operating system has all of the patches applied.
