How to get laptop to connect to network?

Following a complete system restore on DS's laptop at the weekend to fix problems opening Windows, now I can't get it to connect to our wireless network.

We've got a Belkin router and have the desktop and my laptop connected to it at the moment.

I've tried everything I can think of to connect it (using my limited knowledge of these things). I keep coming back to the same message:

'The connection to Belkin_G_Plus_MIMO_117287 was cancelled
This might be due to time out or user action'

I'm going round in circles again now. Can anyone help? I'd really appreciate it.

Have you entered the encryption key?

  • Yes, I think so. I've got the network key from the desktop and entered that but it hasn't helped except it took the red X off the icon showing the signal.

So can you display the routers configuration screens over the wireless connection.

Type the IP address of your router e.g. 192.168.2.1 into your browser.

  • OK, I've had a look round but don't know where to find the IP address, and if I find it I'm not sure where to put it!

    Sorry to be a pain.

Try Start, Run, type cmd OK

Type the following into the black window followed by Return:

    ipconfig /all

The Default Gateway displayed is the IP address of your router and you enter this into your browsers address bar e.g. http://192.168.2.1

  • I did that and went to the Belkin page with lots of info on, which I've printed off. Now what do I do?

    Really appreciate your help.

Assuming that you connected to your router over the wireless link, this proves your wireless is working.

Try entering http://209.85.129.99/ into your browsers address bar.

If this works you have a DNS problem.

  • Sorry, I think I've confused things here. I can't connect to the IP address from DS's laptop. So going back to your question in post #4 the answer is no.

As I say, my technical knowledge is very limited so I kinda wing it a bit.

I tried entering the link in your last post but can't connect to that either. DS's laptop will connect to an unsecured network and access the internet using that.
