  • New to the chat forum, but have used the MSE tips before. Signed up for the fuel card as like everyone who owns a car it is costing me a fortune in petrol at the moment.

added to the OCuk Forums, lets spread the word, get as manay people as possible!
  • I just don't see how this is going to work, no petrol retailer is making enough profit to be able to give a 5p discount on a litre (unless like Tesco's they can subsidise it from elsewhere)

Anyone who thinks "the price of oil is high, oil companies are making massive profits therefore we can negotiate a discount at the pump" doesn't understand the way the petrol market works.

The extraction side of an oil company is run seperately from the retail side and the price of the petrol moving between them is set by the petroleum markets i.e. oil companies profits are largely outside their control.

When the oil price is high, the extraction side makes money but the retail side doesn't, when the price of oil is lower the extraction side doesn't make money but the retail side does.
  • When (not if) this scheme comes into operation, it will force other operators to follow suit which can only be advantageous for all MSE's. Well done, Martin, for spotting this.
    Question---- Why stop at petrol/diesel????
They who ride tigers cannot dismount at will.
  • What a fab idea. just hope it all works out! :p

I've signed up and have received a reply thanking me and saying that things are progressing well.

"Thank you for registering with Pipeline and demonstrating your support for lower fuel prices.

I am pleased to say that the campaign is making great progress. We are in active discussions with a major fuel retailer to negotiate discounts on petrol across the whole of the UK. This will be achieved through a special discount card which will be issued free of charge to all our members as soon as the group is large enough.

We will be posting out occasional updates to members in the next few weeks but meanwhile, if you have any questions about Pipeline, do feel free to email me.

It may take me a while to get back to you, and your question may have been answered elsewhere, so please keep take a look at the FAQ on the website http://www.pipelinecard.org/ before you write."

    Sounds good!

I wasn't saying they actually watered down the fuel.... It's just poorer quality (different additives).

I know there is no accurate measurement but I've tried it 3 times with each fuel and I do the same journeys every week and all three times I measured the fuel comsumption and with Tesco I got 45, 46, 46 to the gallon and with Esso I got 49, 49, 48... Proof enough for me... Esso have fuel additives which enhance performance... 3-4 mile to the gallon is alot...
And was the ambient temperature the same for all 6 tanks full, or did it change in a way which would have helped the ESSO fuel to give better mpg?

I think in this scheme the "retailer" will not be the one selling you the fuel, you will be buying it from the wholesaler through the retailers premises. I pointed out earlier that ultimately it will lead to the downfall of the retailers, and the benefit of the supermarkets if they are not included.
