Instead of going though > start > Shut Down / Restart etc, is there a way of creating those icons on my desktop?

I remember a little desktop widget in Vista you could get that did this not sure if a xp program exists that does this too0

Also use a free malware program
I also recommend using firefox and use the noscript addon.

That indicates a problem with your browser settings, not a problem with Google.
Your browser security settings should never be set low enough to let any website install anything on your PC unless explicitly trusted.
The best setup that I've found is Firefox with NoScript.
