I rang Royal Mail about this recently and they said the sub post offices dont accept them anymore, but the main ones do

Strangely enough it was a Crown PO that I had difficulties with (but they now accept them and give me a blank pad when asked), all my local sub POs in shops etc are happy to supply and stamp the pads.

I think it is just one of those personal preferences type thing and they pretend it is official.

I now do all my ebay posting by using the Royal Mail site for buying prepaid addressed labels. You can also print out the certificate of posting, which will include all consignees details. You do still have to get it stamped at the Post Office however to be valid.

...recorded delivery is just what it says...the item was signed for by somebody somewhere but it doesn't prove it was delivered to the correct address. You need the special delivery option for this. My OH is a RM manager and says the RD just gives confidence to the sender, but is really just a bit of 'window dressing'.

Whenever I ask at my local post office for a proof of posting, they give me a normal receipt and handwrite the postcode on it. Would this count in the event of a claim?

Yes, I've claimed using this without problem.

I get given a hand written pad one if they use stamps rather than a printed label.

The sub post office I go to gave me a pad of POP leaflets, I still use them and they still stamp them. She did tell me that they can't get any more but I can download them from the Post office site.

Yes - I have claimed for 3 lost parcels this year with a simple receipt and handwritten (by me) postcode on it. Was refunded each time.
