how long to keep central heating on for?

hi, just wondering how long is best to put the heating on for so it really makes a difference, at the mo i put it on for about 45mins, it gets the rooms warm but not for long and are soon left with cold rooms. Is it best to put it on for a few hours during the day and then for a little while at night?
