It's not going to fold. It's merging with Lloyds TSB.0

It will go jubblies up if the merger talks fail probably, NR was in merger talks right up to the end.0

I can't really see this one failing if it's being announced in the media through Peston. After all the flak he took over Northern Rock he won't have published it unless he got 'the nod' from someone high up in the financial world. It's probably a 'done deal' arranged with a bit of 'help' from the FSC and BoE.
Just as well - the FTSE was actually falling until that point. Given that the DOW closed up over a percentage point yesterday evening in the States, that is nothing short of disastrous for the London market. A higher DOW after a day of (heavy) losses on the FTSE almost guarantees an instant bounce the following morning in London.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
And up she goes. Ftse around 5075. It reminds me of being a kid on a roller coaster except it`s my retirement taking a ride.0

HBOS *is* Bank of Scotland.
Bank of Scotland is a subsidiary of the HBOS Holding Co. The ratings agencies downgrades were on the HBOS Holding Co. and Bank of Scotland. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -
The idea that Brown hates the rich after he sucked up to the City for 15 years and turning the UK into a super-rich tax haven is frankly laughable. To be blunt, it would have been better if he did looking at the current economic carnage.
Having HBOS bought up seems the logical step to take. Considering the banking "industry" is about to be heavily regulated (unless the politicians really are mad), the competition issues may be secondary.Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0 -

SomeBody who pays £25 to get their few hundreds out of the HBOS is not a true money saver. Anything below £35000 is Gtd by the Govmnt so that's £25 plus whatever interest you were getting, wasted.... on a needless panic.
If it were a matter of a "few hundreds" (sic) then I wouldn't have bothered. I'm well aware of the so-called 'guarantee' up to £35k (which, as others have pointed out, hasn't been tested yet) - it's the the bit over £35k that bothers me. With the alarm bells ringing the way they were yesterday I had to try to protect myself. Yes, it was panic and I'm still not relaxing until I can find somewhere a bit safer than the foreign bank where my savings currently reside. Not easy these days though is it ?
Anyone got any suggestions - apart from NS&L? or anything on-line? I need to spread and with all these mergers etc it's becoming difficult.0
