chimney advice urgently needed please

I need to have my chimney tested by having a smoke test done (I am looking at replacing the ancient, unused gas fire in situ).
However I am currently having the room walls papered. Is it possible to have a smoke test carried out whilst this is being done, or will there be any damage/mess caused to the new paper?
Would appreciate any advice on this matter, thanks.

Smoke test is done using a small pellet, when lit gives out copious amounts of clean white-ish smoke, if your chimney is fine, you should not have smoke spilling back into room.
I had one done 2005, I found out chimney was breached with smoke going out chimney, some smoke spilled into bedroom above via vent that is installed on wall, there was no damage, I just opened windows till clear.

Some of the coloured pellets can stain but they are not generally used by chimney sweeps. They whilte ones are standard.
If you go to the plumbers merchants you will probably find you can buy a pack off them (I used to for my job, checking equipment airflow etc).
The thing is if you want to check for draw, or blockages I dont think a smoke test is always the best option as some chimneys I think need the heat of the fire to create the good draw.
Best thing to do is call a sweep out of the yellow pages and find out what the call out charge is.0
