My Sister is Moving to Greater Manchester

Hi guys,
My sister has now decided to move further north wards to Manchester. She knows nothing about the place and works from home. She would like to know where the good areas are with the good schools ( she has two 12 years olds so needs to know where the good schools are) and what areas she should avoid. She plans to rent for a while. She would like to live in a semi rural area with easy access to the town.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Chadderton Fold. North Chadderton. Nice countryside. Close to m60.
Good schools - Bluecoats0 -
Depends on her budget for housing really - Some nice 'rural' areas but maybe out of her price range - Hard to say really unless we know the size of house and budget.
Also is she planning on driving into Manchester (Very busy commute and future congestion charge!) or travelling by public transport?A blonde... cleverly disguised as a Brunette.......;)0 -
House price range would be £250k - £300k for a 3 or 4 bedroom house. Hopefully the people would be nice and friendly as well.0

Sale/Altrincham/Hale is on the South side of Greater Manchester classed as Trafford area Excellent Schools for 12yr olds . Lovely area with good ammenties Trafford Centre is near enough for far enough away.
Hale can be a expensive place to live though more the Cheshire set type of area.
All the area has lots of friendly people we are Known for it£2 Pig has £86 in his Tummy. I am seriuosly Become a O/S Saver0 -
Cheadle Hulme and West Didsbury are nice places to live (the latter can be really studenty in some places though)
Cheadle Hulme is where I live - nearer Stockport than Manchester but only 20 minutes on the train into the city centre of Manc. Its really leafy and nice - expensive to buy but we rent a spacious place on our small budget and its nice to be in a nice area.
Before we moved here we made the mistake of moving to Walkden (the house was advertised as Worsley, which although nice is still only a stones throw away from chavsville!) I got my car vandalised on numerous occasions for no reason whatsoever and two men had a fight in the street and one banged the other ones head into my car and the police had to take blood evidence off it - wonderfulstill got the dent to prove it!!!

Ooooh I'm originally from Cheadle Hulme! (moved down to Essex four years ago though!) I'll second that it's a good area to live and the schools are decent. (well when I went there they were anyway!) You're also close to the Motorways (M60, M56 - leading to the M6), and the airport. Within easy drive of nice countryside and shopping (the Trafford Centre is only 15 mins drive away and John Lewis around the corner) and easy enough to get into Central Manchester either driving (not sure about rush hour though) or on the train.
My parents sold their three bed semi around 18 months ago for around £215k so you should definitely be within price range of what you're looking for.0 -
Thank you sooo much guys for all your help. It sounds great that I think I'll move there as well!Posted by bebee

I love this bit. My sister has been through a lot and desperately needs to settle in an area where she and her family feel they can belong and make friends.0 -
 hello fellow northwesterners
Me & My family have lived in Northenden, then Gatley, then heald green and now in handforth/ wilmslow ish way. ( im in london now tho) Youll easily get a 3 bed semi in heald green for less than 200 http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-10899030.rsp?pa_n=3&tr_t=buy&mam_disp=true

plenty to choose from.
Gatley :

Not too sure about Cheadle Hulme, although have been out there quite a bit, quite nice pubs etc, not sure on public transport.
Would not rule out anything in this area at all cheadle/ heald green./ gatley/ cheadle hulme. although cheadle itself doesnt have a train station cheadle hulme does. All good areas IMO, good schools, nice catchments. Used to be quite "jewish" so if you are of the faith there is a synagogue in Gatley.
If you are reliant on public transport I think Gatley is a good bet, as youve a train station ( few stops into Mcr Piccadilly) and a number of buses too ( into both manchester/ altrincham/ stockport) Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Greater Manchester is a fairly large area
I'm from just outside of Rochdale on the pennines near Smithy Bridge and Littleborough. They are on the outskirts of Rochdale and have a village feel with large detached family houses on estates and lots of cottages. It is 20mins by train to central Manchester and an hour to central Leeds, but surrounded by the pennines.0
