In Conrol Panel -> System -> Select the Device Manager and find the Sound entry. Expand it. Click the entry for High Definiton Audio Device with the right mouse button. Uninstall it and the software too (check the box).
Now put the PC to sleep. When it restarts it will reinstall the Audio device. Meantime the update above (KB929685) seemed to have kicked in and PRESTO - sound again!
My GF laptop had the same problem too... and this method works. I did it by just unstalling the High Def. Audio Device, but not the software.
You can try the original method if you feel more comfortable, but read through the forum first before doing anything..
All the best!
p/s Also, if it doesn't work first time, repeat it again, cause i repeated the same process twice before working (some ppl works after once and some twice)!0 -

Have followed the instructions in copperminecottage's post but MY problem is there IS no 'sound' entry so I cannot expand, delete, uninstall or anything else!
Any thoughts?

Can you confirm that there are ~no~ unknown devices shown in Device Manager (or whatever Vista calls that now)?
The only other possibility that I can think of ATM is that the on-board sound device has been disabled in the BIOS. That would need a bit more investigation...
Def no entry referring to 'sound' in device manager.
Delay in answering is that I have only just today got my hot little mitts on the laptop in question!
Can you help?0
