Hi, my sound has gone missing, when I hover over the volume icon it says
"no audio output device is installed"
any ideas please. It happened after I installed a windows update, Vista SP1, thinking this may be the problem I uninstalled it, no change, been to Windows vista site, and can't see anything that would help.
your help would be much appreciated.

sorry to hijack this thread but we have the same problem. How do we identify which sound card is installed and what site do you use to get the drivers?
Thank you.

Hi Flossy, I honestly can't remember how I got mine back, but if you hover over the sound icon, does it say, (No) Conexant high definition smart audio HD2, if so, I would put that in your search engine, and see what happens, knowing the way I think that's probably what I did. If I can remember I will let you know.0

Bless you glitterygert for answering. No, the only message is as I posted above and when I look in things like Device driver there is no reference at all to sound so I can't just go onto a website and download drivers as we are not even really sure what the name of the sound card is!!
*!^*! Vista.
Thanks anyway and if you do remember anything more that'd be great.:o0 -
have you tried to right click on the icon?, I'm really sorry that I can't remember.0

I've never needed to try it myself, but others here have used and recommended this freeware:
http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html
It should give you enough info to get the driver if it is shown as "Unknown device" in Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager.
When you know the device details it's quite easy to google for the correct driver.0 -
Thank you fwor, but the problem it is showing 'no sound device installed, NOT unknown.
Have looked in all the usual places, I think, but no further forward as to what driver I need!!
I'm slowly gnawing my fingers off in frustration!
Any other ideas?x:o0 -

Can you confirm that there are ~no~ unknown devices shown in Device Manager (or whatever Vista calls that now)?
The only other possibility that I can think of ATM is that the on-board sound device has been disabled in the BIOS. That would need a bit more investigation...0
