For blood stains on garments, I use cold water and gentle rubbing with a bar of soap.

I haven't tried this method on a mattress but I would be tempted to try it before using anything stronger like bleach. I would use an old flannel, soak in cold water then rub on the soap bar...........then gently rub the blooded mattress area.

Let us know how you get on. There are obviously other MSE members with the same problem stain who will benefit from your feedback.

I've not had a chance to try out any of the tips so far as I seem to be out of stock of everything mentioned! Anyway what I did do was pour some lemonade onto the stain (thinking back to the soda syphon on stains trick) & it seems to have lifted it a bit.

    Thanks again everyone.

I make a solution of washing liquid in a spray bottle and mist the affected area, then rub away like mad.
I use this method for everything, and it does work, though you may need to do it a couple of times.
I put it in the spray, as it mists just enough to clean but not soak the affected area, so rugs dry overnight, and the mattress shoudl be dry by bedtime.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

I find that the newer "colour safe " bleaches like domestos ox or tesco 02 bleach will remove blood from anything without taking out all the colour like normal bleaches do. They also smell a lot better , best used neat on areas that you cannot wet too much like mattresses.

And there was me thinking i was the only one this has happened to...

I got so fed up with the problem, and worrying that it might occur I invested in a mattress protecter out of Debenhams or somewhere. It is fabulous, definitely £20 or however much well spent. It has a sort of plastic backing therefore resistant to liquids, but is also breathable and it doesn't make that horrible plastic rustling noise. The top of it is soft cotton and it's machine washable. Once your bottom sheet goes on over it you can forget about it, and never worry about your mattress again. Fabulous, prevention is defo better than cure...

Gosh this goes on a bit, I don't sell them for a living or anything, I just think it is was a particularly good buy. Oh and there is a sale on in Debenhams right now!

    Hi all,

I am renting out the house for 6 months and needed extra beds which were kindly supplied by freecycle. However on the double bed mattress they are alot of old blood stains:eek: Any ideas how to clean them? I've tried some so called removers but no good. Do you think using a carpet cleaner would be a good idea?

    Thanks all

Last night one of the little witches got her vampire blood on the carpets of our landing and playroom (and all over the bathroom, but that has come off). I sponged it with cold water at the time, in the middle of the party, but in the sunshine this morning the carpets are really stained. I just tried star drops, but its not shifting. Has anyone got any ideas please?
