design my own website

Options
I would like to design my own website adding text and digital image files.

Can anyone recommend any software (free or bargain, of course!), preferably something on the internet which will give professional results.

PS I am not a techie so an easy-to-use program is a must

Thanks

    http://buildfree.org/quicklinks.html

Has a list of links to online sites which will let you build a website.

The root site (http://buildfree.org/) is a bit confusing, but has lists of decent stuff on there (all free) - templates, etc.

    Forgot to add:

If you want any online free web-type training, that's free too at:

    http://www.w3schools.com/

HTML, XML, scripting, etc - found this an excellent resource when I was learning.

I used Frontpage to create my first website. It was already installed on my computer so cost nothing. I did by a book with a CD which gave step by step tutorials. I found it very easy to use. I tried some of the online sites but found them to be a bit limited, but that depends on what you are trying to do. Have a look at my web site https://www.beachesrus.co.uk

    HI

I would recommend learning some html no matter what package you use. There is some nice informal advice at : http://www.htmlgoodies.com/

Or http://www.parasoltraining.com/ have a really excellent ‘demo’ course (It’s free - you just give them your email address and they don’t spam you)

I was going to buy some software when I discovered that the Netscape communicator 4.6 that came with my computer has “Netscape composer” built in which is quite good.

i have just started learning html. and i can make a decent webpage using software like frontpage..but when something goes wrong i found it very hard to find exactly why. and now i use notepad for all my html and although im still learning i can see where the web structure comes from and can do a lot more than i could with frontpage accurately.
its like driving a car..you can do it without knowing how the car works..but when something goes wrong you are stuck. having even the basic knowledge will help you out

I think a lot of people don't like wysiwyg editors because they make the code very complicated and difficult to understand and edit. Thats why I decided to go the Html route

If you know just a little html you can edit one ot the templates available from http://www.freelayouts.com and a lot of other sites.

You can also get button and logo makers at:

Older versions of FrontPage were criticised for producing bloated code. If you looked at the HTML that it produced, you would see endless reams of MS-related stuff. A tip for anyone who doesn't know: right click on a web page, click 'view source' <or view -> source at top of browser> and you'll see the code which produces the page. Good for learning. FP2000 onwards has cleaned up the code more than older versions but still has some extraneous code.

FrontPage Express is a very different <and inferior> animal. It used to be included free with Windows I think and was a cut-down very poor relation to FP.

I'd agree with learning HTML, even if it's some of the basics so you know what is going on in a WYSIWYG editor. Most editors have split-screen options or similar where you can look at the HTML produced and write or adapt it there. There are numerous HTML tutorials available on the net if you Google 'html tutorial'.

If you can afford it, Dreamweaver is one of the best editors producing very clean code. <I use DW MX now.>

For the OP <original poster>, there are numerous free WYSIWYG editors around. Try https://www.download.com <search for WYSIWYG> or look at cover CDs on computer mags - they often give away perfectly good older versions of software. Or buy from Ebay.

    I learned with FrontPage 2000 - it's pretty user-friendly.
