Wicker funeral plan?!

I've put this here because I dont know where to put it, so apologies if it's in the wrong place!

I want to start thinking about paying for my funeral (hopefully I've got a good few years yet, but time is wearing on!).

I can find plenty of funeral plans online, but I would like a woodland burial and to be buried in a wicker coffin if possible.

Does anyone know of any pre payment plans for this kind of funeral?

  • Hi

Im answering off topic a little bit, but hope it helps. There are a lot of options on funeral caskets and cheap options. I know a company although not personally, https://www.ecoffins.co.uk . Make sense really keep the cost down on somthing that lets face it really.... does it really matter

Thank you very much, thats a lovely link. :D

I agree, it doesn't much matter (though I do like the idea of being buried somewhere the birds twitter and flowers and trees grow, silly as that is, but that apart no luxuries wanted).

    Again, thanks :D

Mil now resides here, she chose a wicker casket.

But the important thing here is that earthworks sold them, she bought and paid for everything a few months before (she had pancreatic cancer).

They are a lovely bunch of people there and would happily talk to you on the phone.

Make sure everyone knows of your plan tfor a woodland burial - I was reading something recently that you can't be embalmed if this is what you want - something to do with the chemicals used apparently. Let the undertaker know!

Thanks everyone for your lovely replies.

Im only young (ish, in my own head) being not even 40 yet, but I'd like to get it bought and paid up (for me and husband) so the kids dont have to be burdened with it all.

I can't understand why anyone would want to be embalmed anyway and am surprised that in this day and age it's not considered as highly bad for the enviroment.I have family work in the funeral business and they say they certainly won't be getting embalmed since they know what it entails.
  • Pipkin, you have exactly the same plans as my Dad for when he passes... except he would rather be put in a cardboard box apparently!

We have an undertaker down the road from us who sells any type of coffin, basket, box whatever you fancy. The good thing about the cardboard coffins are they come flatpack so you could put one in the loft or like a friend of mine slide one under the bed ready for whenever the inevitable happens.
This particular undertaker is busy trying to get permission to do outdoor cremations for people who want them.He has a remote site ready to use.I'm hoping that he gets granted his permission as I'm going to sign up for this type of cremation for myself.I know I'll be dead but I just don't find being stuffed in the oven like a Christmas turkey in a conventional cremator appealing.

    Thanks everyone :D

I knew about the cardboard coffins and they sound cool too, but I think I prefer wicker (not that it will matter much to me I know).

You can even be buried in a wardrobe/bookcase I believe.

  • I've seen bamboo coffins that are also lovely :)

I'm totally into the idea of this kind of funeral. With luck, plenty of me will be taken (organ and tissue donation, depending on how choosy they are!) and I'll only need a small box :D
