One of the things I've been fascinated by is when or how economic pressure will finally cause the boiler to burst with regards to unyielding petty bureacracy. I'm thinking of privatised parking companies charging people who are 1" over a kerb etc, or fines for being 1 day late with car tax. Must be loads of other little things that have been nibbled away during the good times.

    Amen to that.

With all the cash floating around in recent times, people have been prepared to tolerate the seemingly never ending list of things nibbling away at you to take your cash. All those petty fees and charges etc.

Once times get tight, expect that to change. Which is going to cause all sorts of trouble because I'm sure that right now plans are underway in the halls of government to increase this sort of sneaky backdoor revenue raising.

Other things I expect to change are:

an end to 'fancy food' (Sargasso sea salt and Somerset cider vinegar handcooked King Edward potato chips anyone)

an end to people pretending they give a fupp about how their chickens were raised or meat was killed.

a fad for 'back to basics living' - nothing to do with being skint from all the debts, oh no

people quietly forgetting about 'eco friendliness' in favour of getting the cheapest goods and services

and probably a lot more stuff that is going to be pretty worrying - more racism and xenophobia, probably even more social decline etc.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

    SHAME ON YOU. EMBARRASING.

    You mean "EMBARRASSING" ;)

  • I've just heard on the radio news that someone was saying that some of these city employees will find it difficult to find new employment. He said that many of them don't have any formal qualifications and were just trained on the job - so all the IT staff, training staff and bankers - who apparently don't hold formal accounting qualifications (really? couldn't tell!) - will struggle to compete in the new job market.

Of course, qualifications don't count for everything but they give you an advantage over others competing for the same job... especially when your only previous work experience and practices led to your former employer losing billions of pounds and going bust. I can't say they'd be my first choice if I was recruiting.

Let's just hope they saved/invested some of those mammoth bonuses for a rainy day. I suspect many didn't, splashing out instead on sports cars and champagne, and those who did probably invested in property.

    Oops.

That is pretty insightful, and probably pretty true!

    BANKERS

The collapse of Lehman Brothers has forced thousands of UK staff to pack up their desks at the Canary Wharf offices. Do you feel sorry for them?

    Not me, Jezza.

    Listen live: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/radio2/

Will also be on the iPlayer later.

And Martin will become a household name (if he's not already, that is) and probably get his own TV channel.

    On Freeview, of course. ;)

Well there's plenty of jobs at tescos stacking shelves!

If they do get into difficulty they can always sell the lambo and x5 as well as downgrade from their penthouse at docklands for a nice bedsit or studio flat.

This is a personal opinion only. This is a forum for personal opinion.

I'm afraid people who consistently make basic grammatical errors, ie consistently through a lack of education rather than a keyboard mistake, somehow have their argument diminished for me.

If they can't discern between lose and loose how am I to trust that they understand much of the complexity of the current economic climate? Is it more the case they are simply jumping on a bandwagon and spouting rhetoric?

I'm afraid I don't believe the "almost certain riots" anyhow, but clearly some people should be following the link kindly supplied above by steadysaver and improving their knowledge in other areas rather than worrying about riots.

I constantly make mistakes between lose and loose... doesn't make me stupid.

Im a MEng Engineer in Control Theory... I deal with Matrices the size you never saw in school (27x27), I deal with complex feedback systems.... yet my english skills aren't up to that much

Just like to say having perfect english doesn't make you intelligent.. it just gives the impression of intellect. A lot of rich children who have perfect english and literacy skills have no comprehension of most fundamental things in life because they don't need to.

Flip side of the coin for yer!
  • I'm not one for pedantry, but people getting the basics wrong consistently, is really irritating. Before signing up to a forum, one should be given a quick test on the differences between lose, loose, their, there, and they're.
