My only advice is don't listen to the news or read the papers, I got totally fed up of hearing about the downturn, I switched off, and I feel much better for it.

If you do the basics, compare your ulitity bills, drop a brand at the supermarket, and careful spending on non essentials, you can't go far wrong. Don't worry about what might happen - life is too short.

I do think the media are over broadcasting this "credit crunch" thing, they want something to happen so they have got news to fill their 24 hour broadcast, switch off, and don't buy papers - a total waste of money, why would someone want to read yesterdays news when we have 24 hour news coverage:confused:

  • Hi Merlot, thanks very much - helped a bit. But I still worry...
  • Everywhere you go all you hear is 'credit crunch.. credit crunch', its no wonder people are panicking!
You say you're doing all you can to save money and thats all you can do.. just carry on doing what you're doing and try not to worry too much! :)

    Once you have:
    - done all you can to eliminate waste and unneccessary spending
    - done everything you can to increase your productivity at work
    - done everything you can to increase what you earn
    - protecting any savings you have by reducing debts and not having all money in one institution
relax, pat yourself on the back knowing that you have done all you personally can do to fix the "credit crunch" - the damage done to world money systems by bad debts not recognised as bad debts until now.
After this rest assured that the problem will eventually go away once we have all done the work to pay off the bad debts through a combination of taxes paying off the new public debts and the effects of inflation.

I'm completely sick of staying 'positive' but once I drop my guard I know it'll start getting to me. I'm starting to loose my umph for saving money aswell. There's only so much we can all take.

The term credit crunch is over used, heck, we even have a credit crunch busting coat

    I've just noticed your thread.

I agree I too am fed up with hearing about the doom and gloom but i fear things are going to get worse before they get better, the media that want to keep it alive as it's good for headlinges.

We are coping so much better now. This year is the first year we are about 99% producing our own vegetables from our allotment and being rewarded with an endless supply of eggs from the chickens in our back garden.

If you are able to spare any space in your garden to grow veg then do it becauce to date we have saved thousands.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

self sufficient - in veg and eggs from the allotment

Hi mum of 4 - well, since I wrote my "fed up" bit I managed quite well. I sort of told myself to get my "backside" in gear and that was it - no point being fed up and depressed - better to do something about it. Keeping positive, being thankful for all I've got - I am sure that there are many people who are much worse off than my family of 5. And with the festive season coming up - hooray - just that keeps me going :j. And yes, it all seems like it's gradually getting worse but the main thing is not to give in but to get on as best as we can. All the best. xxx

I'm fed up too.. I already do everything I reasonably can to save money, so I'm just trying not to worry about it or I'll end up getting really stressed... just dreading my Northern Rock fixed rate term running out in 2010(I've written more about my situation in the NR thread) but there's nothing I can do about it until the time comes and I know the situation... just hoping the credit crunch has blown over by then!!

Oh, and I've become a competition addict, ESPECIALLY when it comes to those we'll pay off your mortgage for you competitions! ;)
Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice. :(

I got a bit fed up as well especially when colleagues went on about their holidays (can't really afford to go on one). Then I realised that 2 of them had to work overtime to pay for these holidays and another has 2 jobs and lives in rented accommodation! Made me feel a bit smug knowing that I have my own place and need only work 5 days a week with lots of time to see family and friends.
I only look at the teletext now and don't listen to any news, means I can just read what interests me.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Well, I can`t say if the media reporting of the recession feeds the thing or not, but there`s no denying that for a while now it HAS had an effect. A few months ago now I noticed a sharp increase in the price of almost everything where I live. Fuel..petrol and diesel, well, here we pay among the highest prices in the UK, and yet have no public transport....food, many of the basics have doubled and even tripled in price....electricity went up, I use a pre payment card metre (got no choice) and the fella from the Hydro came round a while back to put it up again, we had no letter this was to happen and that was the third time this past twelve months.
And coal, which most folks use here on isle, has almost doubled in price too.
That started to immediately have an effect and now, some months after, there`s no sign of a letup, and many folks are seriously in debt.
So I doubt we can really blame the media for reporting how things actually are. Though I always seem to see it being about the big businesses and banks etc, maybe they should look at the average or poorer household and report how badly it affects them/us.
I`m at the stage, like others, where there simply isn`t anything else I can do, but it is still a worsening situation. That makes things look pretty damn bleak. :(
Much as I`d like to see a way out or some improvement in the near future, I don`t. Makes me wonder how many will simply go under before any improvement happens....
Got a rather surreal feeling this is gonna be a Last Man/woman Standing affair. :);)
