I agree with yourself on this, instead of putting the remaining equity to the children I don't see what is wrong with it still going to your girlfriend but not to her kids.

The settlement as I understand it is for a roof over their heads, which with yours and her money this is doing. I therefore would recommend this remaining equity (which could rise as time goes on dependant on house prices) be put towards your girlfriends pension.

I assume she hasn't worked all her life in order to look after the children. Therefore I would suggest this equity is put towards funding her retirement later in life plugging the gap in her pension income.
