I would do the same with both: put in casserole, as snug fitting as possible, add water / beer / leftover red wine to about half way up beef, and water or coke to gammon (search for Nigella's recipe if you like!). put foil under lid to make it even more snug, and cook low.

very moist and tender! plus gravy foundation from the silverside.

What temp is low though, I've never been sure of that (in using an electric fan oven).
How long do you reckon it would take?

I'm usually a good cook, just never dealt with ham/gammon joint!

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

Thanks :-) I just don't want to mess it up, it's quite a bit of cash sat in the oven lol. I put it on 150'c about an hour ago, with water, lids and foil like you said :-)

what would be a good substitute for allspice? do you think a little ginger/cinammon/nutmeg together might work?

St Delia says about allspice "This looks like a smooth peppercorn but larger, and it is so called because it is supposed to resemble in flavour a mixture of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. ". Exchange your ginger for cloves and you've got it.

I have a jar of Allspice, and it says it contains Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg & Cloves, so I'd say your mixture comes pretty close as you're only missing Cloves. I'd give it a go :)

Are you sure your jar isn't mixed spice? Allspice is a single spice, with lots of flavours

Can anyone help? I have bought royal icing sugar unstead of normal icing sugar. It's to make a cream cheese topping for a carrot cake. Will it work like normal icing sugar? Terribly silly question me feels, but I genuinely didn't notice when i bought it.

it's this only it says royal icing sugar

I suspect it may be ok but don't want to waste precious ingredients

I have both, and both are by Schwartz - and you're right, in my haste, I misread the label, which says:
The Allspice Berry has a warm, fragrant aroma which tastes like a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger & cloves

So "tastes like" rather than "contains"

    Sorry, my mistake :)
