well done you! Am doing the same but still buying occasionals like eggs and bread as havent had the energy to make bread...:( Will also now have to seriously debate with mysef about free range/organic eggs as no money...vs the fact that I really abhorr the way they are kept so will prob have to have less eggs to not compromise on what is, for me a fairly strong principle...tricky.

Oh no :(
I do know what you mean.
I am lucky enough to live near a free range chicken farm. I think I would be on less eggs too, if I had to buy from the supermarket :o, as these ones work out about 1.10 a half dozen :D

I have been buying bread from the shops, but as I have been more "healthy" :rolleyes:, I haven't been buying as much.
Spookily, I did start off the bread maker about half hour ago, as I had run out of shop stuff... and went into "use up the flour in the cupboard" mode:rotfl:

I seem to have lost my wine making mojo too :(
As I have lots to bottle, but cant get into it at the moment.
Oh, actually, maybe thats also part of "Health mode" :cool::rotfl::D

ISOM - Do you have a Sa!nsburys nearby? Is free range (rather than organic) acceptable to you? If so check out the basics eggs. They say they are Barn eggs on the box but may actually be free range ones in the box. You can tell by the code printed on them. The number before the UK denotes ...
0 = Organic
1 = Free Range
2 = Barn
3 = Caged

My current Basics ones say 1UK13150 for example and are free range eggs and were sold in a box marked Barn eggs. See here for more details on the codes. I didn't believe it at first so copied down a code from an egg, double checked it on the above website and it was indeed a free range egg so I went back and bought half a dozen. It means I get them for ~88p for 6 instead of £1-40 ish. :D They aren't the largest of eggs but are fine for me...

I don't get through many eggs so only buy them when I fancy making a cake or pancakes etc so I don't know how regularly this happens but its certainly been the case the last few times I've wanted some since I found this out... Not sure about any other "value" supermarket egg ranges but it may be worth a quick check... :D

Hope this helps...

I didnt know that one - ie about the code on the eggs themselves. I only ever buy freerange ones - but will check the others there to see what their code says now and whether its okay for me to buy them.

I can see me now standing there in the supermarket queue with a box that doesnt say "freerange" on it and commenting to everyone in the queue that "its okay - I am allowed to buy these eggs - they really ARE freerange because........." - rather than have people thinking the same sort of comments about me as I am busy thinking about those I spot with packs of battery eggs in their baskets (lets just say - they aint exactly charitable comments I'm thinking about the person in front of me with battery eggs in their basket.......). I know one has to make various compromises all the time - but I think this is an important one NOT to make. I just think "if one cant afford freerange eggs - then one cant afford eggs full stop and doesnt get them".

Re organic eggs - I do recall reading somewheres that its only necessary for a freerange chicken to be fed organic food for the last few weeks for their eggs to count as "organic freerange" rather than just "freerange". Naughty....very naughty....when is a lie not a lie territory? So - I dont buy "organic freerange" - I just get the standard "freerange" anyway - I dont see the point of spending that extra price differential for "sharp business practice" in effect IYSWIM.
• ISOM - you have my sympathies - things are pretty crap moneywise here too and I'm getting fed up of thinking in the supermarket that I wish I ate meat because such-and-such is cheaper! We do have plenty of grain-based meals but also quorn and other vegetarian equivalents which are so expensive! I'm also trying to combine no money and no meat products with a low fat diet and ALL the cheap low fat yoghurts have gelatine in them! Argh :mad:

Free range eggs all the way here too - sometimes a lady in my building at work sells them for 90p/6 (proper happy homegrown chickens too), not recently but I'm hoping they will have them again soon.

At least it's not just me... :p
• am doing ok.

Have managed to trim my household spending budget further. Was spending £8pd on everything, cleaning, bathroom stuff etc, for the 2 of us. Have got that down to £6 and am aiming for £5. Not as low as a lot of people on here I know.

we buy a newspaper on Sat & Sun and the local Spar where we usually get it didn't have one yesterday, so we went off to the local CoOp where OH proceeded to spot 'bargains', including boxes of Thorntons chocolates for £5, which are all very nice, but only get eaten IYKWIM. And he wanted roast chicken today, so ended up spending £25 - which I was trying to get him to see added another £1 per day to the monthly spends. I was actually physically pushing him away from things at one point! If it was me doing the shopping, it would have been a newspaper and a bag of extra strong flour to try some ciabatta from a recipe I have recently found.

I made him pay for it as he had wanted it all, but he used the business card which I pay. It was a new replacement card and he said, well, I had to test it didn't I!

Went to an annual show yesterday held by an allotment society in Tunbridge Wells which is near where I live. They put on a great show each year, with largest vegetables, a scarecrow competition, shortbread, cakes and jam comps and loads of other things, it's a good afternoon out.

Got a huge basket of plums and another of pears for £2.50 each, and some hardy cyclamen for the garden which I will be putting out this afternoon. After the roast chicken and the grand prix!
• Hi there Peeps!:D

I just wondered..... if anyone has made any "Remoska Bread" and if they have what recipe have they used? I might post this on the Remoska site if I can find it :rolleyes: I would really like to try making bread myself as hubby bought me a new Remoska for our 2nd Anniversary:T:j:j:T
It was a suprise too! he knows I have been looking on Ebay for a second hand one for ages but they have all gone for highish prices which I didn;t want to pay! this way I will have Lakeland's guarrentee of replacement if somthing goes wrong as they are excellent supposedly. Hopefully I won't have to find that out though;)

Hope everyone is well. Still enjoy reading all your posts when peeps have time!
Have a good weekend (whatevers left of it!!)

Lightisfading. Quorn is on offer loads of places just now. we only use the mince or pieces but they're 89p per bag in Sainsbugs and BOGOF in Mr T's - Quorn fillets are £1 a bag in Mr Ts too at the mo' - (all of these are frozen)

• hello lovely people...thank you for the message about eggs...ones I got today are 3de0351631 which means they are very unhappy eggs I assume? Will deff be rummaging in sains! Really dont like to think that I am in responsbile for a chicken living like that but also money is extremely tight so have to be more frugal. Finding the consience vs reality a bitter pill.
Re wine making its all I can afford at the moment (and even thats quetionable!!) and for the forseeabe future but have rationalised and sold all but 4 demijohns which allows 2-3 batches on the go! The chai is deeelicious and I'm going to see if I can get teabags at the indian supermarket cheaper than twinings. Just syphoned a merlot off (last of the kits) and an unidentified one which is, I think, ribena...tastes quite strong alcohol wise but not of ribena! The chai is more like a rose...different taste from shop bought and possibly aquired but I have aquired it! hugs all and lovely see people!
I've asked weezl to post a particularly gorgeous photo of Ferg who gets more edible by the day! Shaz I gave you a big kiss and cuddle from you yesterday!!

Whilst I agree in part, I do think people who take the moral ground can be a tad insensitive at times. When the chips are down, you HAVE to put principles on a back burner in able to survive. I was left with three children aged between 6 & 9, so have had to do the best I can with the money available. I buy the products I do because they serve their purpose in a way that both helps my purse & allows me to sleep a little better at night, but I am also not so naive to think I wouldn't kill another breathing thing if my family were at risk.
There is a very wise saying about walking a mile in another man's shoes which in these dark days of unsettled finances, should perhaps be considered before casting aspersions.
