I think the problem most people have is the connotation of the word 'religion' which implies rules and boundaries and shame. I believe that was not the type of life we were called to, I believe Jesus really existed and I can have a relationship with the God that created the universe (how much greater is that than having to say certain prayers or stick to rigid rules? :D) there is a lot in the Bible about being free and if you look at the beginning of the church in the book of Acts it was all about looking after weaker people and having 'all things in common', I would love to be able to live like that and there are a lot of churches that do. Weezl I think others are right about your generous spirit, I believe some people give from their wallets and others give of themselves, it is good not to let money rule us after all.

Hope everyone has had a good day!

Thanks Weezl and Confuzzled for the using-up-scones ideas :T Tonight I shall be blitzing some up and trying a crumble - if it's successful I'll probably make a boxful of scone-crumbs to go in the freezer for later too, for thickening of stews and soups. Great ideas, and will report back on success :j

And Ceridwen, you'd be welcome for dinner (!) but I suspect it would be a fair way to come from Wales - I'm near to Evesham :D
Are there any other Worcestershire people here?

LilMissEmmylou - Good luck for starting your challenge, I hope the list is useful. I recommend the purchase of a blank notebook for Day One too - my OH and I note down every day what we have made / cooked / spent / invented, and we stick receipts and photos and things in too. It's become quite an interesting record of our journey!

on the subject of chutney, i made more yesterday.

i had quite a few bananas going spotty way to fast, and a few 'shrinkly' plums (my 7 year old daughter gave the poor wrinkled things that moniker, i had to pass it along as it gave me such a chuckle!)

i chucked in quite a few small red onions that were getting a tad past their prime, the remains of a few half eaten apples (my daughter is horrible for this, so i rinse them off, scrape the edges off and sock them away in the fridge or freezer til i can use them) and a few packets of the very cherry fruitabus i got from approved foods for 20p each. i could just use sultanas but this adds such a nice kick to chutney i don't mind the extra few pence.

into this mix went some cumin and mixed spice, i didn't have to add much sugar because the bananas were so sweet so that was a bonus. the result is a scrumptious chutney... my only problem is i now have so much chutney in the fridge i don't know how fast i can eat it all up :rotfl:

i've made 6 jars of the stuff recently, i think i will just have to start freezing fruit for later jars as i can't seem to keep up with eating it all. i think in the next few batches i'll be more conscious of making it for storing (for anything i keep in the fridge i'm not that fussy about giving the jars a waterbath and how much vinegar i put in them to make sure they stay preserved longer). it would be nice to have some put away for winter i suppose and to bring to the family for christmas dinner but i'm running out of jars too!

anyway just some ramblings about my recent foray into saving what would otherwise be binned fruit

oh, and i'm so very popular with the birds right now, not only do they get the slim remains of the apple cores chopped up and any fruit i can't scrape off the stones etc they are also getting the broken bits of ramen noodle, bread crusts from slightly moulded bread and the fat off my pork roast...we had a HUGE amount of birds eating and happily chattering away yesterday...made me feel all proud and happy and i've noticed we have less bugs around here lately...i like it!
  • That Belief-O-Matic got me bang on too - I'm a happy little witchy woo.:D
sorry, I almost never do silly quizes like that. Just had to share the results :D

All this Chutney - do you have to use "lumps of stuff" my OH doesnt like the texture if it's lumpy. Do ya reckon you could make smoothe chutney?

I did the quiz, apparently I'm a Secular Humanist which is just about spot on. As I said previously I want the community aspect and good deeds of a religious community but without the religion..... where do I find that?!

Well I came in as Unitarian Universalism 100% and Secular Humanist 99% with Liberal Quaker coming in 3rd with 86%. I'd say I'd agree with Humanist (but I've never heard of Unitarian Universalism!). I'm too much of a scientist (my actual job lol) for anything else... I tend to need proof of things. Liberal Quaker is curious though - I guess I agree with the human side of things and the working for the betterment of humankind but not so much the actual religious beliefs...

I feel a little cheeky for derailing the frugal chat but it has helped me see people's motivation for doing what they do :)

I am doing much better on WW with spending; as I am planning my meals and not snacking I am doing a much better job of not 'popping to the shops'. I had some friends round last night and had cooked 2 chicken legs (£1.40 from local butcher) in my le crueset all day on low, they were delish and enough meat for 5 people. Served with a small portion of rice and 2 naans (about 40p a packet from Home bargains) shared between us. All in all a lovely frugal meal, and went down very well.

Anyone else like peppadew peppers? Any way of getting a cheaper version or making your own?

i'd also be curious about sugestions for liver. as a child i loved fried liver and onions, now i can't eat it often as the taste of blood is about all i can taste. but it's always so cheap and often on clearance like the hearts and kidneys were tonight so...
I do liver in mince dishes (e.g. lasagne, spag bol, chilli). Instead of 1 1/2 lb mince I do 1/2 lb liver, 1/2 lb mince and 1/2lb lentils and rice. I chop the liver into chunks and fry it in the frying pan till it's cooked. I then put the bits on some kitchen roll to get rid of the excess fat and whizz it in the food processer until it looks a bit like mince. Once that's done I stick it in with all the other stuff which is being fried (mince, onions etc.)

weezl that letter sounds good. On nappies, I don't know what nappies you're using but we switched from terry squares to muslin squares to save on washing since we were changing them every time they got wet anyway.

    Hi everyone!

I normally lurk on here and get all the good tips but I have to say that your way of using liver is inspired SusanC! Me and OH tried it for the first time yesterday as liver and onions and weren't too fussed but now you've given me a brilliant way of using it, thank you!

Hi, hope you don't mind me joining in

I have been lurking on here for a bit too and have really enjoyed your 'religion' discussions, so much so I took the quiz too! Can't say I was suprised about the 100% secular humanist, 99% Unitarian Universalism () but was suprised I scored more on Scientology than Roman Catholic which was how I was brought up. I even have an o level in RE.

Like Bunny200 I too would like the community aspects of an organised religion but without religion! There must be some organisation to it as my grandma had a humanist funeral service.

I am going to get my OH to do the quiz as he was brought up with no religious input at all but is very much more spiritual than me. Should be very interesting. Thanks for the link.

To use up the scones I would make a veggie stew/casserole and pop them on the top for the last 20 minutes or so. I like the way they are crispy on top and soggy with the gravy on the bottom. Yum!
