i managed to pick up 2 packages of ox kidneys and 2 packages of lambs heart (3 hearts in each package) for a princely grand total of 20p

now i must admit, i'm not a huge kidney fan and i didn't grow up with them. i've eaten them mixed in steak and kidney pie but i can't eat large portions of them, the taste and smell really put me off

sooooo i was hoping someone could give me some suggestions for a way to mix them into something where i might not notice the taste so much

also, will soaking them in a bit of water first help remove some of the stench? (i wretched a few times while i was bagging them up, they smell like the litrine to me but hey at least i'm trying to find a way to eat them!)

in total i have 1kg of kidneys which i have divided into 6 bags (now in the freezer) i really don't think i can stomach much more than that at one sitting, unless i find something really scrummy to make with them.

i do NOT have any beef of any sort, right now i simply can't afford it however i do have some sausages and chicken and plenty of pulses/lentils etc so if you have any recipes or ideas along those lines please do tell.

i'd also be curious about sugestions for liver. as a child i loved fried liver and onions, now i can't eat it often as the taste of blood is about all i can taste. but it's always so cheap and often on clearance like the hearts and kidneys were tonight so...

as for the hearts, well i thought i'd just chuck them in the slow cooker and make a stew with some pulses but if anyone has any ideas please do tell. i like chicken hearts so i figure teh lamb hearts will also be palatable especially after they become a site more tender from hours of slow cooking

confuzzled! hello you were having a massive catch up last night eh?:)

hearts: yes I think they are lovely done in the slo-cooker, makes them lovely and tender and just with onions and garlic made their own lovely gravy...

kidney: could you skin your sausages, fry with kidneys lentil and onion and then bake into a meat loaf?

chuck em in chutney, if they are more sour than normal add in a pinch of bicarb and than you should be able to use the normal amount of sugar you would use for a sweeter fruit

for me chutney basics are: onion, sultanas, an apple to bulk it out and then whatever fruit or veg that needs using up, simple as that

chuck in vinegar and sugar in amounts commisserate to how sour/sweet the contents are and cook til they are smelling gorgeous and softened nicely. (around 20-30 minutes for me normally but i don't make huge batches at once)

mind you i don't make mine to be shoved away on a shelf for ages (doesn't last long in my house i love it!) but if you do want to do it long term and are worried you arent' using enough sugar and/or vinegar to preserve it properly you can look at a few recipes to get an idea of what the norm is and just substitute whatever fruit/veg you have for what's in their recipes ;)

That reminds me - really must ask the person I know next time I see her just how it is she makes jam without using sugar. I know she doesnt and have had various jars of jam off her and they last for months okay.

Dont suppose anyone here knows the basic method of making jam without using sugar purlease?
    - and I'm going on from this to think "maybe its possible to make chutney without sugar as well?" If you think about it it must be - I presume that people were making chutneys back before sugar became available (?thinks? Middle Ages was it?)

    ISOM -

Same principle as going for a meal with a friend - some friends would "flash a lotta cash" at it and buy everything readymade and expensive - but others wouldnt be able to afford to do that - but would have taken the time and trouble to make homemade things that they know you would like. I know which of those two scenarios I would rather have..

Couldn't agree more with both of you!icon7.gif

    Morning everyone,

Confuzzled, what about trying devilled kidneys? With cayenne pepper, mustard and worcester sauce the flavour would be disguised a bit?

Now for the scones mentioned in the title to this message! At the weekend I made a couple of hundred scones for cream teas at our village fete. In the rush I put a bit too much salt into a large batch, and thus ended up with about 40 slightly salty scones that were not good enough to give away. They're not really horribly salty, they only have a salty undertone, and I'm wondering if any of you have good ideas as to what I can do with them?

So far I have: put some in the freezer, split some in half and made 'scone pizzas', and used some on top of a mince 'cobbler'. Running out if ideas now, and still have about 20 left!

    Elfin.

how about a kind of savoury vegetable crumble? Ratatouille base with crumbled scone topping and a little grated cheese and a couble of dabs of butter on the top then baked?

thinly sliced and dried in the oven on low heat to give a kinda melba toastish effect then serve with cheese and chutney?

blitzed and used to thicken a tuscan bean stew?
    :confused::D

Following the 'food for the soul' thinking, I find it incredibly difficult to say which 'religion' I am. I guess it's not the done thing to just pick out the best bits of the majority of them  but then again they do mostly have the same teachings.
More & more I think of this particular site as a "religion", in that so many people come here for basically the same reasons, looking for answers that come from so many sharing souls :D We share the same common goal to provide the best we can for us & our families given the resources we have to hand, whilst making the least impact on Mother Earth. This thread in particular let's us explore how we can achieve all of that, so long may it prosper!

I was having a similar conversation with OH on the weekend. I'm very definatly atheist and feel uncomfortable around organised religion, yet I find especially in recent times with the economic climate that I'm missing out on the support and community that an organised religion would offer. In recent months there has been a lot of talk in the media, amoungst friends/family, on forums that we need to change our attitudes in life, that material goods are not a right, that responsibilty is something that seems to have been forgotten (see MP Expenses scandal!) etc etc. I find that there are, as ever lots of people saying what we shouldn't be doing but no-one saying what we should be doing. I can't see a public figure who is leading by example as I would imagine a leader of an organised religon would (reverand, iman, rabbi, priest etc). I want to be part of a community that will support each other and lead by example to how a moral person should live their life. I want to have that knowledge that there are people there for me but I don't want to go to church!!!!! I need an atheist church, I guess until I find it I shall have to continue to worship at the altar of MSE!

.....cor that was a bit deep wasn't it!?

aye i am slowly reading through, though after a week i finished going through 121 pages of the sneaky ways to save pennies thread so i figure i can continue wading through this one to satisfy my OS fix :p

ooh the sausage idea might work, i'm not a big maker of meat loaf but i could give it a try, thank you and the idea for the hearts does sound very tasty indeed mmmmmmm

I like all the depth that we've gone into. I'm a very lapsed catholic but have a firm belief in God and the power of the human spirit. I try to live by the ethos of 'do as you would be done to' and to treat everyone with respect, fairness and kindness. I hope I'm bringing the children up with the same values too. I personally dislike people who say they are christian but aren't in day to day life IYSWIM? People who sit in church every week but wouldn't help someone in trouble. Hope that doesn't sound harsh :o

Like Bigmumma I think I take a little bit of lots of different religions, and their values, on board. Thios site is unusual in that, on the whole, people are very supportive and non-judgemental :T

    .

thanks for that, sounds like a plausible way to disguised them!

as for the scones, you could grate them up like you would old bread to mix with cheese for a casserole topping and/or you could make savoury bread and butter pudding with them, use them as dumplings in stew etc you could even possible toss in some garlic granules and dried onion or onion powder and fry them to make croutons!
