I love mango with chicken and would have to make a savoury dish with it. Would have a try a s&s chicken or a pilaff with flaked almonds. Yum!

On the frugal baby subject - I LOVED bringing my two sons up on car boots/jumble/charity shop finds. They have fantastic bargains of really good makes of clothing/toys and equipment that we could never have afforded brand new.
I knew nothing of freecycle in those days. (youngest now 15yrs) but it still goes on even now. Just purchased some incredibly good quality shirts on ebay (3 for £1.51 + £2 p&p) that are as new and great makes. DS2 thrilled to bits.

Oh, I do waffle when I get excited about a bargain. :o

Just found this recipe in the latest Tesco magazine so might give it a go (substituting the blueberries for my tinnes raspberries of course)

    Blueberry ripple yogurt ice cream
    250g blueberries
    125g caster sugar
    1 whole egg
2 egg yolks (leaving the whites free for a meringue - yey!)
    300g full fat Greek yog
    300g 0% fat Greek yog
    Juice of 1 lemon

Put blueberries and 25g of sugar in a pan, bring to boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat & cool completely.
Whisk whole egg, yolks, remaining sugar & 150g of full fat yog together and put on a low heat for 3 - 4 mins stirring until mixture thickens. Remove from heat & beat in remaining ingredients.
Add blueberry mixture & stir once only. Freeze for 4 hours until firm. Allow to stand for 45 mins at room temp before turning out.

Mmmm nomnomnom. The picture makes it look delish! They cost it at 43p per serving (this mix makes 10 servings apparently), but I reckon it would be much cheaper than that.

I totally love blueberries but they aren't cheap are they

There is a book on the side at work which is from the 'book people' and has a blueberry relish in it, sounds delish :)

Frozen tend to be cheaper than fresh (unless you get a good woopsie) - Sainsburys has 400g bags (or 500g bags of frozen cherries/black forest berries/summer berries/ raspberries etc) on 3 for £5.

Farmfoods usually has bags of frozen berries too but I'm not sure of the price.

    Still not too frugal though...

Edit... Ohhhh I've just remembered I froze a wee punnet (that were woopsied to 30p week before last) :j

    Hey everyone.
Hope everyone is feeling well today. Cazz I'm glad you're feeling better. When I was really down last year, what I did was start a blog and take pictures of my cheap and cheerful creations.

I think the weeks will fly past and before you know it, you'll be sipping on something lovely on your holiday happy with the fact that you are now debt free.

I'm in a bit of a mood today. When my mum and sister came in, they decided that they don't eat egg custard, when I remember for a fact my mum used to make them when I was younger.

They also didn't bother eating any of the chilli, and had crisps and biscuits instead.

I would simply not make them anything, but I feel bad as I can't give my mum any housekeeping money and so I buy some of the food, and try to cook so they can come home to a proper meal.

It's annoying though because I'm not 100% well, and have to plan what I'm doing and take frequent breaks so I don't flare up my pain. I spent nearly all day yesterday making those egg tarts and tortillas, and my back was killing me after rolling out dough and pastry, even though I took regular breaks.

    *deep sigh*
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

. My basics are now nearly run down, and I'm about to do a price comparision on mysupermarket.com, who wants to bet that the total will be the same give or take 5p?

I was right. The prices were nearly all the same.

As Asda have a special offer on sugar (billingtons 2 for £1.50), and pasta (2 and £1), they came out the cheapest.

Guapa so sorry that your family didnt appreciate the huge efforts you made with cooking ...families eh...cant live with em cant shoot em! Hope your pain improves...can you get referred to a pain management clinic? Have started a new blog but not linked it yet...
Went to B&M and home bargains (right next to each other) to try and get stuff for bosses leaving do but will have to hunt over the w/e as didnt have what I wanted...

Will hunt out delicious and foolproof merangue recipe...havent cocked it up once and its lovely and white! back in a mo...ok a long mo as search facility on come dine with me isnt great. Here it is...you can swap kiwi for any fruit an its yummy...if I dont say so myself!!
    Serves 6
    Ingredients

    4 egg whites
    8 oz / 225 g caster sugar
    1.5 teaspoons white vinegar
    1.5 teaspoons cornflour

    For the filling

    • ¾ of a can of condensed milk
    • ½ pint double cream
    • Juice of 3 large lemons
    • 3 large, just under-ripe kiwi fruit

Method: How to make lemon pavlova with kiwi fruit

    1. Preheat the oven to 325F, 160°C or gas mark 3. Lay a sheet of silicon or baking parchment on a baking tray.
    2. Whisk the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl until they are stiff. Whisk in the sugar a spoonful at a time. Blend the vinegar with the cornflour and whisk it, with the last spoon of sugar, into the egg whites.
    3. Spread the meringue out to roughly an 8" circle on the baking tray and build up the sides so that they are higher than the centre. Put the baking tray in the centre of the oven, turn the heat down to 300F, 150°C or gas mark 2 and bake the meringue for 1 hour. Turn the oven off but leave the pavlova in the oven to cool, to prevent it from splitting open.
    4. Remove the pavlova from the baking tray and place on a serving dish. Place the condensed milk, cream and lemon juice in a basin and beat until blended and the mixture is thick and creamy, then pile into the centre of the pavlova. Place in the fridge and leave to stand for at least 1 hour before serving.
    5. Peel and slice the kiwi fruit and arrange attractively around the edge of the lemon pavlova just before serving.

Hi all I must say I love this thread, so many fab ideas. Just wanted to add a recipe we are having tonight which my Nan used to always make me.

Take two tins of spaghetti in sauce and put them in a casserole dish, then layer sliced tomatoes over the top, although tinned tomatoes will be fine. Then put mashed potato on top of that with some grated cheese. Bake in the oven about gas mark 5 until the cheese is melted and the potato goes crispy. It is totaly delish and very cheap to make aswell
