Does anyone know how a friend can send sms (preferably free) from australia?

Log into any of the (many) websites that offer free SMS messaging over the web as using an Australian mobile will incur International charges. Also if they use Skype, they can send texts at a competitive rate without needing a mobile.

There are a number of sites that offer free sms. I'd just google "free sms" to see what comes up.

That's not necessarily a good idea, as some of these aren't ethical and end up costing people premium rate messages
