No. Unless there is fraud involved.

Non payment of consumer credit debt is a civil rather than a criminal matter. To say that it is 'illegal' not to pay that sort of debt is incorrect.

The Office of Fair Trading guidelines on the collection of consumer credit debt states that it is:

Failure to pay debts such as magistrates fines is a different matter, but there are no criminal sanctions available for the failure to pay a credit card.

Thanks, that sums it up perfectly!

If they got into so much debt in this country, what makes them think that this won't happen again in their 'new life'?

Sounds like a case of fixing the symptoms, not the problems.

That could well be right. If you are looking to start a new life abroad, it would be best to get your debt problems solved one way or another here first.

I joined this forum just to answer your question. The best thing you can do for yourself is to contact http://www.cccs.co.uk/ they are a free service to help people in debt. They will contact all of your creidtors and work out a plan and most likely get the interest STOPPED. You will have to make 1 payment a month to them and they will distribute the money to the creidtors for you. They do not keep any of the money and they really helped me! The main thing is to get the interest stopped NOW!

  • Hey MyVix,

Where are you planning to head off to just our of interest? Anywhere warm and sunny, a beach nearby maybe? May be you will head somewhere where the money you have obtained can go a bit further and where you think you wont be found?

You should be reassured, it will be very simple for your creditors to locate you, with exception to just a handful of countries to where I doubt you would be going. Nonetheless, life will not be the same, in the future a mortgage might be desired, a credit card maybe, .... who's gonna touch the gone away girl!

If you pass your details and creditors details I would be very happy to locate you for them for free! A good will gesture by me to help prevent the other posters on here paying for your bad debt in raised interest rates because of the increased costs in locating you.

Running away from your debts is not a wise thing. I understand such an act will remain on record of financial institutions for years into the future while it may only stay on your credit file for 6 years. A person who acts responsibly and comes to arrangements with their creditors will also was be seen more positively in the future.

Where is it your going anyway? I could do with visiting somewhere warm!
