what is this on screen?

there is something that appears on the top left of my monitor screen randomly. it is sometimes there and sometimes isnt there. i dont know what it does and i cant click on it. it has a small norton symbol in it so is it just something to do with that? i just find it very odd that something can appear without explaination. there are things that happen that worry me sometimes. since downloading version 2.0 of norton 360 the pc runs alot slower compared to version 1. pop ups can attempt to get through and i get the message saying it has been blocked but then it appears. i never get warnings about cookies anymore. i noticed when my dad logged into his profile today the icon for norton on screen was still the old one without the n in the middle. certain things were excluded from being scanned within norton that i hadnt chose to exclude. i think *nsp was one, something to do with volume was another and something else i cant remember.
anyway heres a photo i took of the top left corner of my screen with the symbol i am curious about.

yeah, i plan to i am just penny pinching and waiting until november when norton runs out. yes i know there are free ones but i prefer to go for one with a suite. kaspersky has been recomended on another thread. it is only £20.
honestly before i downloaded version 2.0 i had no problems with norton. its just all these niggly things like i have mentioned here and that you may remember from another thread that get me worried that it may not be down to norton because when i downloaded it there was no firewall for a brief period and during that period dodgy emails were sent from my hotmail account. i know i have mentioned these things before.
so what is that symbol doing top left of my screen?

If your going to pay for one (IF it has a firewall ~ im unsure) use NOD32
Thats been explained to be the best money can buy
If you want free stuff ask me. My computers armed to the teeth.
As for the symbol im unsure but guess its in some form of SCAN mode?
Honestly now. I wouldnt wait till nortons run out. Id get rid NOW. Its awful at detecting some nasties and by that time your computer may be flat dead (And you WILL be kicking yourself)

It is norton protected recycle bin .It backs up things you delete in case you want them back .
    It can be turned off
To disable the Norton Protected Recycle Bin in Windows XP
On the Windows Desktop, right-click the Recycle Bin icon and click 'Properties'.
On the 'Global' tab, click 'Use One Setting for All Drives'.
On the 'Recycle Bin' tab, click 'Standard Recycle Bin'.
In the 'Title' field, type the following text (without quotes): "Recycle Bin"

    Select 'Also Empty Protected Files'.
Click 'OK', and then click 'OK' again.
    Restart the computer.
  • Pathetic advice- totally unneccessary. From the link you provide:
There's no doubt that the freeware Tweak UI is a tool designed for people comfortable and confident with mucking about in the guts of their Windows XP installation. If that's not you, we strongly caution against using this program capriciously.
Why on Earth did you post that ridiculous link?

To see if you would follow your trend of just spamming and generally being an idiot.

Seemed an ideal opportunity to see if you could resist or not. Seems I was correct "your and idiot and offer nothing in the way of advice"

Well done. Theres a stone over there, why not crawl back under it.

    /kthxbye

PS its actualy a nice bit of kit for those not comfortable getting into the "GUTS" of the OS.

    erm
Im not saying thats NOT true. But surely unchecking 'enable protection' means it ceases to have resident scanning on that drive?

  • You need to keep the thread on track and not hijack it with some pathetic piece of softweare that has clearly impressed you no end- but is NOTHING to do with the OPs problem.
This thread isnt about you or me

I think MSEers need to click your name and "view more posts by TorrestheGreat" just to see what a shining example of well rounded advice and sensible contributions you add to MSE.

Agreed - isn't it ironic how Norton (which I hate), costs money and is worse and slower than (say) Avira or the Comodo Firewall (I mean, look at http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php).
