    What you connect to the internet with at the moment? I presume it is a USB modem?

    Then, what you need is:

    1. A wireless modem router

    See here: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=UFNQcm9kdWN0U2VhcmNoUmVzdWx0cw%3D%3D&mfr_uid=-1&cat_uid=39&keywords=wireless+modem+router&order_col=sell_price&order=ASC&show=stock&Submit=filter

    I would probably go for this one (click here), or a belkin, not the cheapest one though.

    Now, there are two ways to connect your computers to this modem - wirelessly or with a wire.

    The laptop will, obviously need to be connected wirelessly. If it has built-in wireless like mine does then you don't need to anything. If it doesn't, you need one of these:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=13283526003&action=UFNQcm9kdWN0U2VhcmNoUmVzdWx0cw==&subcat_uid=480&order_col=sell_price&order=ASC&order=ASC&order_col=sell_price&show=stock

    To connect the main PC, you should do with a wire (as it is cheaper).

    For this you need:

    1. An ethernet card (like you said)

    See here: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=13283582700&action=UFNQcm9kdWN0U2VhcmNoUmVzdWx0cw==&subcat_uid=1151&order=ASC&order_col=sell_price&show=stock

    (the cheapest will do fine)

    and

    2 A cable

    See here: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=UFNQcm9kdWN0U2VhcmNoUmVzdWx0cw%3D%3D&mfr_uid=-1&cat_uid=24&keywords=cat5e&order_col=sell_price&order=ASC&show=stock&Submit=filter

    I'd go for a Belkin.

    Hope this helps!

    Also, once you have this set up it will be possible to allow you to transfer files from one PC to another or print from either PC to a printer connected to the other one. Just pop on here for advice on setting this up (although it should be in the manual) :)
  • I'm currently on AOL and bought a Belkin wireless Router - AOL don't support this make and wouldn't help with my set up problems.
  • Gizmoleeds thanx for the replies. ill take a look at the links and see whats waht,

    Careful_Shopper im going to ring aol 2day and see waht advice they give me.jujst seen aol are offereing free wireless router if you subscribe to their platinum deal,, worth a thought

    thanx again
  • Ladydriva - I got fed up when trying to get help that I understood from the call centre that I asked to cancel my subscription and now have a mac code - me thinks I may have been a little hasty! lol

    same here. I have been with AOL for 7 or 8years and a couple of months ago gave them a call regarding the fact that I am on AOL Gold but can only receive 512Kb connection. They told me that as I was such a loyal customer they would only charge me £14.99 for the same service. A month or so later I decided to get up-to-date and buy a wireless modem-router. I had a few problems and decided to phone AOL for a bit of help. I was then told that although I had a supported modem-router, they couldn't provide me with any support as I was an AOL Silver subscriber!! News to me! Anyway, I gave them what for and stupidly cancelled my account with them. I was even more dismayed when they didn't even try to keep me as a customer. When I started using AOL, I was paying well over £100 a month (including call charges)for 33K dialup! I had stuck with them through thick and thin and they just said 'OK' when I told them that I wasn't happy with their behaviour (I thought they were making a gesture of gratitude but were just downgrading my account) and was considering leaving. As I said before, I stupidly cancelled my account rather than ask for a MAC/Migration code. This hasty act led me to be without any internet service for nearly a month. Anyway, I am now with Tiscali who make AOL seem better than they really are. At least with AOL I was getting decent connection speeds (sometimes Tiscali is 70K!!) and their Support Staff had some idea what the hell they were talking about, sometimes. So, I am looking at leaving Tiscali on Monday and who I am going to try next God only knows.

    I am afraid you have to be careful with AOL regards routers etc. they only work with certain ones. I use Speedtouch (recommended by AOL or used to be anyway) with Speedtouch PC cards on two laptops, have been working happily away for the past year. We often have 3 loggons going at the same time and no loss of speed.

    Warning...Speedtouch have the most diabolical instructions, but once you get it to work, brilliant!

    I'm with AOL too, I read up loads about the wireless router etc... and eventually bought a DLink router with usb laptop 'thing' - as you can see I am totally crap with computers but so far I've had no problems at all, I recently got a new laptop and I switched it on and it just came up with 'found wireless internet connection do you want to connect?' !!! It was as easy as that!!

    I was worried that I would have to buy an aol supported one which didn't leave much scope for getting a bargain but then I realised that 'not supported by aol' wasn't the same as 'not compatible with aol'.

    I got mine from PCWorld - online deal but bought it instore.

    I'm on AOL silver and the only annoying thing is that you can't have two screen names logged on at the same time on different computers so we tend to use internet explorer then go to the aol sign in screen on the laptop. Bit of a nuisance but I'm not going to upgrade just for that!
