Jeyes Fluid

If I were to put some jeyes fluid on some tea bags and put them on the grass to try and deter the cats would it ruin the grass?

  • No idea but it didn't deter the cats around here when I put teabags soaked in it on our gravel covered garden

Oh, I was hoping it would help. OH wasn't too impressed with the amount of cat p** he had to pick up before he could mow the grass.

As I was saying on another thread, a kind neighbour, fortunately 100' from my house, has decked over his entire garden, leaving his cat nowhere on its own territory to 'go.' Consequently it uses my lower path. Wonderful!

I find that tar oil, diluted in water sprayed on the gravel path keeps the cat off and also gives that neighbour a nice, 'public toilet' style aroma to inhale whilst on his decking. However, if it rains a lot, or I forget to respray every week, the cat will be back. At least the path is weed free.

I therefore think that, unless you use a lot of tea bags, this idea might not work. The Jeyes might scorch the grass too and you'd have to pick up the bags each time you mowed.

You could search ultrasonic cat deterrents on this forum to see if people say they work. I think I recall them saying the success rate varied.

I've used tbags soaked in olbas oil scattered around the cats fave toilet and that certainly worked - need to replace every week or so esp in the rain.

Hi Davesnave, we do have a couple of those ultrasonic cat deterrents but the last time we used them my hubby insisted on turning them up so much that I could hear them whenever I was out in the garden and the noise went straight through me. I have told him they don't need to be that loud but his argument is that at least it worked. Maybe we should give them another go but try to get him not to put them on so loud.

Hi Nodwah, have I bought the wrong type of stuff then? I thought I'd read on here about using Jeyes fluid. I think maybe we'll just try them out the front where we have the gravel as they just seem to like using any part of our garden to do their business particularly at the exact place I step out of my car

I bought a CatWatch ultrasonic deterrent as it's the only one recommended by the RSPB. It's not cheap but I managed to get one on eBay for slightly less and it also came with a plug (you can use batteries if you prefer). I had a big cat problem but this thing really works for me, it even saved nesting chicks which the cats had been prowling around before I got it. Cats don't come in my garden anymore :)

The company that makes them offers you a 90 day money back guarantee, though I'm not sure if that only applies through their website. Here's the link anyway http://www.conceptresearch.co.uk/cats.htm

In our town the Co-op, took the idea a step further and played opera to the teenagers who used to hang around outside, turning it up as appropriate, That certainly worked too.

Yeah Lynseydee try olbas oil or similar decongestant with menthol and eucalyptus they really don't seem to like it. I heard this tip on GQT I think.
