For 2 days (as in 16 hours) work my OH would get paid only £880 as an engineering consultant. If he was younger I would send him to retrain as a plumber/heating engineer!
Good afternoon: The grass is always greener...the OH would probably qualify as an engineer if he could do it all over again...your OH's money sounds fantastic and I bet the job hasn't wrecked his knees, back, neck and shoulders but mustn't grumble...swings and roundabouts,eh!;) Btw...the cost of your install would be cheaper as I gather from here and other forums that CORGIs in Scotland bill a lower daily rate than London/Greater London (no surprise there!) but cost of materials would be equivalent. Cost would be contingent on the boiler specified i.e. Viessmann,Vaillant, WB vs. Ravenheat,Heatline,Biasi, site requirements i.e. flueing, condensate waste, sizing of gas supply as well as your location in Scotland i.e. in Glasgow, Edinburgh pricier than Inverness. Regardless, a long warranty eg. 5 years wouldn't go amiss but to maintain the validity of the warranty would require an annual service. A quality boiler installed by a quality CORGI won't be cheap. MSEr andyhop would be best placed to give you a price.

I think you OH is OK Where he is,Only £880
Out of interest "jennifernil" Would you object to paying an Electrician £44-00 Per Hour (Or Part Of ) lol
Sparky: That hourly rate is a bargain from where I'm sitting....is that for a callout? What is the daily rate then?

No its not our hourly rate its "jennifernils" OH,Was trying to pull a fast one!
Our Hourly rate for Electricians/Plumbers is £65-00 We dont do day work,We only do Emergency work so collect alot of £65-00 or £130-00 2 hrs.
Out of hours and weekends its per 1/2 hour.I suppose some Op might think this is very high,But i do not think so.
Normally we are only used as a last resort after Everyone else and his Dog have tried,So in essence we dont really get reccomendations as customers did not want to use us in the first place.OH THE JOYS OF BEING SELF-EMPLOYED!! Can Travel,Will Work For Free!0 -
Hi..I'm with you now...your rates sound similar to down here in East Kent for emergency sparks/plumbers/CORGIs....folks who don't 'nurture' a working relationship with local trades will always pay more in an emergency...now someone will come along and suggest you make 8hrs x £65.00 every working day ( as you can get Scotty to beam you to anywhere in Birmingham to each successive job in a nanosecond and your overheads only include an odd kebab and a cup of trade's tea).

How is this in any way relevant? Oh I see, plumbers/heating engineers are labourers and should know their place.0 -
It takes all trades to make things run smoothly, it just seems to me that some seem to be being offered a lot of "protection" ,and rates seem to have gone sky high as a result, as someone has already said on this thread.
Is a heating engineer really worth more per hour than say a painter ,or a joiner, or a car mechanic ? But then there are no government regulations covering painters, joiners or car mechanics.0 -

I think OH would not be too keen on that! His £880 for 2 days is £55 per hour, but he has only been able to ask for so much since he retired and became self employed. When employed it was more like £30 per hour.
Being 66, he only works now and again (maybe equivalent of 8 weeks per year) to boost his pension a little so we can afford to stay in our present house and have a holiday occasionally, so is not exactly a big earner.0 -
Yes,But i assume when he was employed he was getting 40 hours @£30 per hour £1200 Company Car,Pension Scheme,Health Care,5 Weeks Holiday-Self-employed people cannot benefit from these luxuries,OH THE JOYS OF BEING SELF-EMPLOYED!! Can Travel,Will Work For Free!0

Good morning: Yes. I suppose when painters, joiners and car mechanics start working with gas then their respective trades will become regulated. Plumbing isn't a regulated trade either i.e. anyone can with a bit of plastic pipe and a wrench could call him/herself one. My OH,on the other hand, chose to complete a 5 year plumbing apprenticeship as well as ACS for gas (longer than I'd spent at university qualifying as a secondary school teacher).

Hi
I just wanted to add my recent experience and praise the professional gas fitter that sorted my problem out.
I have a Worcester Bosch combi which is approximately 4 years old, the third week in August it just stopped producing hot water. I found an approved Worcester Bosch fitter under the Corgi section in Yellow Pages. I enquired what his call out was - £30. To me a bargain just to find out what was wrong. He was with me an hour established it was the fan on the top which alone costs £170. He then very kindly informed me that Worcester Bosch do a breakdown call out for £180 includes all the labour and they will replace up to 3 major parts thus saving me his call out and more.
I appreciate he didn't make any more money on my breakdown but he will get repeat business from me and will be recommended to anyone I know who needs a gas fitter for a job well done.:j0
