The most popular of the free antiviruses would be the - AVG Free edition
...and is very well rated...

also regarding spyware ...Ad-Aware Personal is the free version of this software and is also pretty good..... *remember to scan you're hard drive with these softwares periodically to get rid of any nasties...and keep them updated.

...but if you're web browser is FireFox (which it should be and is also free) ...you'll hardly need to use you're spyware software because FireFox hardly lets any in
...loading/browsing web pages with firefox is also alot faster than Internet Explorer! ....if thats what you're using

Hope that helps...

I always use AVG for general protection, but once a week I run trend micro house call. You do not install this free software, it's a tool which has proven to me to be highly effective. Trend micro also offer a free spyware scan.

Yeah ...that did happen with me once ...seemed to be able to detect the little !!!!!! but not remove it  ..but I mosty only had problems with the Isbar trojan.
Anyway I picked AVG at the time because of its record at catching the majority, and also the fact that it is lightish on resources, whereas when I installed Avast, my pc became quite sluggish.
I'm now currently using neither of them tho...
hehehe
Have Nod32 installed - top notch...but not free.
