cream cheese how to find?

I want to make a cheesecake but I think Philadelphia might make it too expensive ... no?

What do I look for and where as a cheaper but just as good alternative to Philadelphia?

Also I've noticed some recipes ask for double cream, some substitute condensed milk, some use both! Some don't use either. Is it good without the double cream?

Asda full fat cream cheese is fine, and it was about 45p the last time I bought it

Tesco do a full fat soft cheese which tastes exactly the same as philadelphia (£1.17) for 81p. I'm sure other supermarkets do their own brands too but the tesco one is the one that I buy. If you check out mysupermarket you'll be able to check out which one sells it cheapest.

I printed off a cheesecake recipe yesterday from UKTV FOOD site and it requires 500g of mascarpone this is usually around 99p a tub so depending on what toppings you are going to use have a look through various recipes and see what cheeses fit your budget, but beware some of the recipes require a lot of expertise and if your not a knowledgable cook having too many things on the go at once can be quiet daunting.

I always use cottage cheese for things like this, I blitz it with a stick blender to knock the lumps (takes a while) out then squeeze it through cloth to remove some of the water

Sainsbury's had an advert last night to say how cheap their "soft cheese" is, is this the same stuff as cream cheese?

i think it's the same stuff - philidelphia equivalent. What I haven't been able to find for years is proper old fashioned cream cheese - it used to come in a small tub like cottage cheese, creamly coloured not white, almost as thick as butter and less acidic than the philly-type stuff. If anyone knows a source I'd love to know.

Tesco has now also brought out a 'value' cream cheese ('full fat soft cheese') at about 45p. Personally I can't tell the difference between that and Philadelphia - I just wish they'd do a lower fat version!

Me too! Sainsburys used to do this and I LOVED it. if anyone knows of a source please speak up!

for the person asking for a lowerfat cheaper cream cheese - check Aldi. i know they do one, what i can't remember is how much it is. perhaps someone else will know.

I've been reading this thread with interest. I'm just about to make a cheesecake and was shopping in Aldi & Tesco today.

Aldi's cream cheese - can't remember the exact price but was between 75p and 90p. I didn't buy for 2 reasons. It was described as 'medium fat' soft cheese (16g fat per 100g). Not being full fat it had various stabilisers etc in the ingredients.

Then went to Tesco. Philadelphia was more expensive (£1.17). 26g of fat per 100g. No added ingredients. Tesco's full fat cream cheese is also 26g of fat per 100g, no added ingredients and 81p. Looked at the value cream cheese. 45p, 23g fat per 100g and the dreaded stabilisers etc.

I bought Tesco's full fat cream cheese. Same specs as Philadelphia and no nasties (other than lots of saturated fat, but that's why it makes such nice cheesecakes...)
