SIM4Travel - new 39p "daily connection fee"

  • Looks like GoSim let you choose the currency to pay in, so if the the selector is set to Pounds (in the top right corner) then that must be what they'll charge you in.

I'm surprised that people would switch to GoSIM rather than one of the brands with IoM or Jersey numbers.
  • The problem with the IoM and Jersey SIM cards is that they too charge an annual connection fee and like Sim4Travel - your credit expires if not used. From what I can see with gosim there is no expiry and no hidden call charges.

Also - I've heard that the IoM cards are treated as international numbers anyway by some phone providers - so no real advantage on the number front either.

Both paragraphs are rather sweeping generalisations which are more likely to be false than true. There are several with no fees or expiry, and come from some UK network inclusive minutes.

I just thought it was time to put some money on my sim4travel card as it was nearly 9 months since I last used it - and discovered that my balance was zero as I have been charged 39p a day for not using it. That was not in the conditions I signed up for (recommended here!), nor did they email me to tell me of any changes. I have phoned them, discussed this, and told them they will no longer have me as a customer. They have taken some £15 from me but lost my goodwill. Don't touch them with a bargepoll.

Actually, it isn't 39 pence a day; that's only on days when the SIM is used to send to make or receive calls, or send an sms.

What you've actually been charged is £1.50 or £2 a month, but it's the same effect for people who didn't receive any notification and could then trickle by on receiving a call every 90 days

They also increased quite a few tariffs in January or so, so there are only 35 countries with free incoming calls, and quite a few outgoing rates went from 25 to 49 pence per minute

With the new EU tariffs, most of those international sim cards are no longer attractive for use within the EU. So, they have all increased their rates, and some have just gone out of business.
  • I have just seen this thread whilst searching for info on Sim4Travel.

I didn't spot the change to a daily use charge either. The whole point of this SIM for me was to be able to receive calls in Europe without roaming charges. So I'm just running down my credit balance before binning it.

I've just checked GoSIM Ts and Cs and there is no daily use charge, no connection charge and credit does not expire. Making calls within Europe is 0.35 and SMS using the GoSIM menu is 0.09 per message.

    RIP Sim4Travel!

Perhaps Martin needs to revise the Mobile Roaming article.
  • Just found out that the old Sim4Travel card is worth £10 airtime credit when you buy a Go-SIM card!
