I have now successfully got a 0% card for husband (Virgin MBNA with free MP3 player offer) and am transfering the balance to our current account.

I also have just received my Egg card and am transfering £6k into my current account for onward travel to my Cahoot account.

Likewise I have been reading many of the threads over the past few months and am sitting on my initial 3 cards, plus 2 I've arranged for my husband. Shortly I will be getting to the time when I will need to be changing. I gather that MBNA give quite generous credit limits and thought nearer the time I would try them. However I keep reading that you either have to pay £35, £50 or £70? for doing transfers. As it is presumably your first time with Virgin MBNA, have you
discovered whether there was a charge when you transferred your money to your current account? I see in the general terms and conditions of MBNA, it says "may". I would welcome your comments
  • ??? I've been looking at the 0% balance transfers. I've done Mint for nearly 9 months and need to swap now. However on the site it says Barclays charge 2% to transfer. Is this the same with Virgin and Egg?
Any clues to which is really the best 0% transfer deal anyone?

Egg or Virgin should not charge you for a BT.

Egg don't charge and Virgin shouldn't while in the intro period, however, after that it costs 2% capped at £35 (going up to £50 soon) with any MBNA operated card.
  • :)Egg it shall be then. Thanks!

As Galstonian says for Virgin it is free in the intro period (thankfully!)
    Nice to save.

    Not here, it wasn't.

I recently applied for a Virgin Card, and asked them to close and merge-in the credit limit from my MBNA card. I then asked them to do a balance transfer for which I was charged £35.

I did tell them that I thought that there was no fee during the intro period but the woman on the phone said it now applied to all transfers. I was a bit disappointed about this but didn't want to grumble too much as I was effectively getting another 9 months 0% against my old MBNA card.

There is no fee during the intro offer. If you consolidate cards it may mean they do not count a second offer as an introductory one (which seems perfectly reasonable since you are not really a new customer)

I am surprised Wibble had to pay a BT fee. When I took out a new Abbey card, I asked for the credit limit on my A&L card to be moved to Abbey (except for £1000). I then did an SBT on my Abbey card for 98% of the credit limit - no fee.

So I was already an MBNA customer. But a new Abbey(MBNA) customer. Only difference is I did not close my 'other' MBNA card.
